12th September 2017: Its visibility from space may have been dismissed as just urban myth but walking on the Great Wall of China is still on many people’s life wish list and now, Rosemere Cancer Foundation is hoping to make the dream a reality for some as part of its fundraising effort for its 20 Years Anniversary Appeal.

The charity is looking to fly a party of trekkers out of Manchester to China in October next year (2018). Over six days, team members will spend between four to seven hours daily walking sections of the Great Wall as it contours hills and mountains in remote areas north of Beijing and snakes through woodland and terraced farmland.

Before returning home, the intrepid group will spend a day in Beijing to visit Tiananmen Square and the nearby Forbidden City.

Dan Hill, Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s head of fundraising, said: “These kind of trips are becoming increasingly popular and we have partnered with a company that has specialised in organising charity fundraising events like this across the world for the last 25 years.

“We really hope our Great Wall Walk will capture people’s imaginations and that we have a good take up as the itinerary being proposed is genuinely quite unique. I can guarantee it will be a once in a lifetime experience.”

To join the Great Wall Walk party, there is a £299 booking fee. The trip itself costs £1,730, with participants expected to raise at least £1,500 in sponsorship.

Anyone interested is invited to Rosemere Cancer Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital on Wednesday, September 20th, at 6-30 pm for a no obligation information evening. Those intending to come to the information evening should first contact Dan on 01772 528346 as refreshments will be served while the Great Wall Walk is explained so numbers are needed for catering purposes.

Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s 20 Years Anniversary Appeal launched in March to raise £1.5 million for a trio of ground breaking projects at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Rosemere Cancer Centre.

The centre, which is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its opening, is Lancashire and South Cumbria’s specialist cancer treatment centre, providing all local radiotherapy among other specialist care. Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s work also extends to another eight hospitals in Lancashire and South Cumbria where cancer patients are treated.
