If you go down to the woods...

FROM the internationally-famous Loch Ness monster to the Yeti and Bigfoot we do love the idea that this earth contains scary creatures that David Attenborough has yet to view close-up as part of a TV series.

And even though England has no possibly mythical creatures of quite this stature, there have been enough reports to make it pretty certain that there are a fair number of formerly wild animals on the loose.

Whether it's wallabies in the Peak District or the beast of Bodmin Moor, police believe many sightings are the result of the 1976 Dangerous Wild Animals Act which introduced strict regulations for the keeping of wild creatures.

It is believed many people released into the countryside animals they had been keeping as pets rather than risk prosecution because they were in effect keeping them illegally.

    Reader Poll
Do you think there are wild big cats in East Lancs?
    Yes
    48.4%
    No
    51.6%

Now we have something described as looking like a large wild cat, possibly a cheetah or puma, seen in the Hoddlesden area not far from Edgworth and Belmont where there were 15 sightings of something similar in 2004.

We still need conclusive proof of this obviously shy animal. In the meantime therefore the message should perhaps be: "If you go down to the woods today...take a camera!"

Just One Street-dog from there can make kittens of the Kings of our Jungle-World.
