Market square is central to town’s future

ON GOOD Friday years ago, you would find Blackburn's old Market Square quiet, sombre even.

The fairground attractions that had been erected during the week would be sheeted up, for there had to be no work on that special day.

But come Saturday morning, what a difference - the shouts, the excitement, the noise.

The town would be crowded full of folk, families with children held tightly by the hand, smiling at each other in anticipation of the fun.

Not to mention the bustling business they brought with them. The town would be heaving.

Now let me think, where is it all now? Oh yes, out of town and out of sight.

I travel about quite a lot and notice the busiest towns are the ones that have a central space, an area where things can happen, like a fair (now what made me think of that)?

Maybe a band concert, different sorts of markets, craft displays, even a Hyde Park corner, and certainly the Remembrance parade - all those many things that make a town interesting, and, of equal importance, busy.

We had such a space a long time ago and maybe we don't need one quite so big, but we do need a focal point.

Now let's see where? The ideal site needs to be traffic-free, near the railway station and buses, have shops all around, close to the Mall.

Oddly enough, I think we may have one. Church Street, fits all the criteria spot-on, apart from one thing - those 'Works of Art'.

I've never been quite sure what they are, but they could be a problem.

I mean, where could they put them and all those people that constantly flock into our town to look at them?

But then I have a thing about street art. I feel it should be beautiful, recognisable and a pleasure to look at.

What about two bed-sits for the price of one. That should get them flooding in.

What on earth do you know about art ? A fifty pound note is beautiful, recognisable and a pleasure to behold.

Specially on the week I don't get my giro.

Not often i agree with Margo but the works of art are horrible and do they really attract that much attention?
Certaily not a tourist attraction.
Yes it would be nice to have a fair or a band but the best possible place for this to be sited would be outside BHS where King William Street is hugely popular.

This thread is somethimng that could be worthwhile at last,a great talking point.the old Blackburnian developers had much more of a sense of comunity, than these present day ones, the towns councillors of the past who in the main were out and out business men certainly knew how to put a heart and soul into a town, then along came the wise birds of the 1950s and 60s,who in the main were of scottish personage and tore the heart out of the place, and never put it backwhilst we have Lords square in this condition lets use it has the central part of the town again, and bring back something to go down town for,all the shops are now in the main on the outskirts,i do have the strangest feeling that the guys down the town hall do NOT want us in the town at all and would much prefer it to be deserted, yes! so come on then lets take the easter fair back into town, think of all the benefits that would bring, lets start making room for events to be held in the town centre, even the grounds of the Cathedral could be put to much better use,we MUST make decisions that bring the town centre into play again, the appearances of the business's in the Town centre do scream at you that they lack investment, but in truth who would invest in such a place at the moment it needs a breath of freshair blowing into it, deff some olde world charm needs bringing back and not just for drinking coffee, for gods sake..

Nosty,

The only person who is gagging for the fair to come back to town is Marge She wants to build a gated community in Blackburn town centre with nice shops and nice things just for nice people like her and other business people like her. No Poor People, well, they're just not nice. Nobody wants to visit Blacburn to take a look at the poor.

It's the poor people that spoil this town.

They keep reminding her of her worst ever nightmare. Losing all her money and not being rich. No more fake flatterers and no more bangles, oh God! what kind of Life would Marge have. Imagine if nobody knew who she was. Would Boomtown ever be the same again.

Chris i think the Giro bit was SS's sense of humour with a hint of sarcasm as well,i have had many convo's with him and he does seem a regular sort of guy, i do believe him when he says he has a job,and in this day and age single parenting is the norm, nothing unusuall about that and i know lots of really decent poeple who are single parents through no fault of there own, calm down guy's.
