Victims become victors thanks to young rebel Jesus

The Dean of Blackburn, Christopher Armstrong, considers the changes which faith brings on the threshold of Easter - including champagne!

Have you any idea what it's like at the graveside? It is horrid - perhaps the worst place on earth.

Such places can be found at the centre of our towns and in the lives of ordinary folk up and down the land.

My last visit to the graveside was at Accrington just after Christmas.

The desolation was compounded by the fact that the grave was liable to subside due to the sodden ground conditions.

It's an unwelcome place, a place to escape from.

I mention this because the Cathedral has now become a tomb.

Yesterday, Good Friday, we commemorated the death of Jesus on a cross.

His family and friends kept watch for a short time then the body was removed and buried in a tomb.

Today, Christians cannot worship.

The inside of the cathedral has been stripped bare and it will be 48 hours before life returns to that normally busy building.

Instead, it is like a graveyard and people tiptoe around.

Now for some of our bloggers and for many others who haven't a clue about church life, most churches might be associated with tombs.

That is light years away from reality.

As governments local and national wring their hands for ways to re-create society in our atomistic culture, there are very few centres of community around: the pub is one; the church is another.

Our cathedral is usually buzzing with activity but today it is as silent as the grave.

We wonder - with those first followers of Christ - whether our hero is victim or victor.

Certainly the heavy wrought-ironwork which hangs above the altar looks more like crown of thorns than crown of glory.

It feels like it too, if you are in the habit of standing underneath it.

As the priest-poet R.S.Thomas says in his poem, The Empty Church':

"Why, then, do I kneel still
striking my prayers on a stone heart?"

What happened then to change all this?

It's a penetrating question that has tantalised generations of folk and it is one which Notradamous asked in his comment on 17 March.

For Christians and for many others who cannot claim to be touched by faith, there are a number of answers:

1. The grave was empty; the body has not been found.
2. Jesus' disciples had a complete change of heart. Having been scared stiff after the crucifixion, they encountered something in the upper room which they understood to be the Risen Lord and made them very bold indeed.
3. There are the other resurrection appearances: on the road to Emmaus, in the garden to Mary, in a variety of other places, all apparently unconnected.
4. The existence of the Church today.

Things have changed. Is it just attitude - Is the glass half full or half empty? - or has something external touched the cynical and scared to change them?

Surely it is both - and we call it faith. The death of a young rebel on a cross now leads to a different sort of life for those who come into contact with him and his tradition.

The tomb becomes a womb, giving birth to new life, life that is changed not taken away.

The Crown of thorns which dominated the internal architecture of Blackburn Cathedral now can be seen as crown of glory.

The victim is now victor: he has conquered death!

Now all this can be dismissed as mumbo-jumbo church-speak - and so it is. It is a different language for a new life.

But let me share with you some old-speak' which may ring a bell.

Yesterday I had a phone call from an angry man whose dad had just died.

His dad was a churchgoer and the son had been trying to contact a priest at the cathedral to visit his dad in hospital.

The message had not got through and the man was understandably upset.

I apologised profusely and promised to make some enquiries about the incident.

As it happened, one of my colleagues had got the message and had visited the sick man twice in hospital.

Both times he had found him asleep so prayers were said by the bedside.

The family were unaware. Once this was explained the family were relieved.

They saw Christ in a different light. Things had changed.

I share this with you as an example of the Risen Lord working quietly in the new dispensation of the resurrection.

The scaffolding of the Spirit is often internal, hidden but nevertheless real.

It is this change in the quality of life which faith brings and faith is generated by these encounters with the Christ beyond the graveside.

Our Lenten blog has given myself and my colleagues a chance to illustrate our longing for a greater understanding of these works of God as we endure lent and strain towards the new life which Easter brings.

May I take this opportunity of thanking my fellow bloggers and all those whom they have provoked through this blog?

Thanks especially to the Lancashire Telegraph for their generous hospitality.

May I end with a challenge: to our friends at Radio Lancashire. Why not catch the spirit of this blog and create a radio-blog for Ramadan or Lent next year?

And don't worry archdeacon. You'll get your champagne!

Thank you Dean Armstrong and all the contributors for a splendid Lenten Blog. I am sure that everyone enjoyed the programme and especially those who have aired their views. Msybe it has helped all of us to better understand each other or at least to try to do so. Good idea for Radio Lancashire I think.

Dear Chris,

I don't understand what you mean when you refer to a 'new Life'. Is there an 'old Life'? or is there just THE LIFE!?

All I see is the Life. Life is Eternal. Birth and death, past and future, are temporal.

Life, Consciousness, Breath, are not subject to change. The Components of your Existence are Everlasting. The Gift of Eternal Life has been given. Has it been received? If you are Alive now then the Gift of Eternal Life has been given.

Why have people been misled into thinking that Eternal Life begins at Death? Eternal has no beginning and no ending. Hence, Eternal.

Jesus prooved that Life could not be undermined by Death. Did he not proove that Death had no Power over Life?

Why is the Church still insisting that Life Eternal has a beginning, after Death? Why does it want people to be dead before they can Accept the Gift of Eternal Life?

The Life you have today, right now, in this moment is ETERNAL!

Not Accepting that Gift is leading Mankind into depending on Death.

Embracing that Gift will lead Mankind into
Heaven. An Eternal Palace. A place beyond the reach of any Death.

Heaven is found by the Living. Not the Dead. Is the Dogma leading Man to Death? or removing the obstacle of Death?

I am here to remove the obstacle of Death.

Death has no Reality. It has no power. It will never determine Anything.

Read some of the posts throughout Lent - nice to see thoughtful and intelligent comment on this website for a change! I'm a non-believer but appreciate the insight and motivation for doing good that religion brings to the people who have written. Thanks to all the bloggers and the people who left comments. See you next year / Christmas?

It still doesn't explain why People have to be DEAD to enter Heaven. I saw the Pope praying on sunday but the suffering has not yet stopped. 2000 YEARS is a lot of praying. No change, suffering continues.

'Jesus died for our sins' Did the world stop sinning? No. Did it end sins within the Church? No. Have you not prayed enough?

What benefit is religious Dogma when it is based on a complete and utter mis-interpretation. Have the Christians got used to praying and don't know how to stop?

Has prayer replaced Honesty? Is it a way of avoiding The Reality?

Religion is a distraction from, away from the Truth.

Nothing more than Clothebrities! Hoodwinking the simple for money and power.

Ah well, at least simplysimon knows the Eternal Truth.

I need to ask this of all of you church top men and church goers,it has been good and i do appreciate you all having the courage to step to the mark and stand up for yourselves,,BUT and now here is the dagger...

Can you honestly ,truthfully profess to be TRUE followers of Christ,i ask this because even though christianity in this part of the world is in decline and really is heading out of the equation, why are you lot not taking out all the stops to reverse this, you are doing nothing of note, you agree with the government when they suggest that teaching christianity in our schools could be quite provocative, you all must surely realise you are fast becomming a joke, and who is losing out here, well your man of easter is Jesus, yes drink your champagne and enjoy it to the best of your abbillities, but please take a very GOOD look at all yourselves..great blog anyhow..lol

Hi Nosty,

You are right of course. All the Church is really following is the self preservation of it's own Dogma.

The People need more than Dogma. The Church adheres to Dogma. It worships Dogma. It's covered in Dogma. It's built on Dogma. (A common held veiw of a mis-interpretation.)

The Church is not the only Religion that has mis-placed it's integrity. It's a cosy cartel for some. As long as they subscribe to the Dogma. Any scrutiny of that Dogma must be crushed. Any Challengers must be outcasts. Any fresh and open-hearted examination of the Human condition must be secondary to the Common Dogma.

My Dogma barks louder than your Dogma. Some would never be seen in a pair of Reeboks, while others prefer Nike.

And Nobody knows why? We are supposed to wait until we are Dead! - WHAT KIND OF ANSWER IS THAT? Surely, if Man can pose the question whilst he lives he should be able to answer it whilst he lives.

I went to a restaurant, very nice place, waiters nicely dressed in expensive gowns. The Chef was most famous for his fine cuisine. The menu was the biggest menu I had ever seen. All Gold and embossed with tassles.

Wonderful white linen table clothes and fine porcelain. Crystal Glass and silver spoons with Lovely candles and beautiful napkins.

The food was Perfect the waiter said. 'Nobody had ever left without being completely satisfied in the history of this restaurant. They had never had even one complaint.' 'No words could describe the magnificence of this food'. 'Trust me' he said, 'There is no greater Chef than our Chef.'

I ordered and sat back looking forward to the delight ahead. I waited a while.

After waiting for what seemed like an entire Lifetime I sought out the attention of the waiter.

'I am still waiting for the Perfect dish' I said. Will it be much longer ?

He looked at me with a wry smile on his face and said. 'We have given you a wonderful menu and you can believe in all I said.'

'But before you can eat this food, You must first of all be Dead.'

When it comes to the Restaurants of Religions, I dont know how they manage to stay in business.

Hi Karen,

If what you are saying is meant to be ironic then you are spot on!

Religion is all about clinging to the Past.

Karen,

I don't remember Christ saying anything about entertainment. A lot of People where out seeking entertainment on friday.

Do you think the Universe was created so that humans could be entertained. Is that the point of existence - to be entertained.

Or is there another Chapter that Man hasn't opened.?

I happen to think there is a difference between the mantras of religious rhetoric and Understanding the nature of Mans True Divinity.

Anyone can learn and repeat the words. My Understanding is that Jesus had a Consciousness that Understood the nature of Divinity. He never advocated a Religion or started a Religion.

by all accounts he was not a fan or a follower of a Religion. His Consciousness was Devoted to the Divinity within Man. He was Devoted to the Heart of Mankind.

Not the words of Man.

Not the printed word.

Karon, not teaching about christianity in there (church) Schools does not surprise me at all,it is not Pc ya know..we have just seen Jesus who they are supposed to follow and respect die on a cross for them, but do they stand up for the right to preach his word at every opportunity,do they hell,i have a very good friend who is very closley connected to a church school and he says this, what amazes him is that when the 1st year intake visit the church on certain days he watches them closely and he says it would appear that 90% of the kids have never been to a church service before,as thay havnt a clue on what they are doing, intake is all about connections, who is who and who knows who, it really is the most unchristian selection process going, but do the Big guys at the cathedral see this, never, not in a month of sundays...lol,,That is what i mean when i ask them to take a good look at themselves, but no doubt it will fall on stoney ground,,anyhow pass that bottle of champagne over girl,i think there is a bit left in there..LOL.. Aaaah Maybe not..(doh)

I have quite a few Muslim friends and i am going to a group meeting with am Imann very soon,do you know that when you talk about Christianity to them the only branch of Christianity they respect are the Jehovas Wittnesses, honestly that is the truth, they say the rest is just made up by men.
Posted by: simplysimon, burnley on 2:24pm Mon 31 Mar 08
All Religion is made up by man. Words were invented by man. Paper was invented by Man. Printing was invented by Man and Distribution was done by Man.

Teaching those words was also done by Man and all the interpretations are the interpretations of Man. When it comes to Religion, I'm not sure if there is any room left over for Divinity.

Jehovas Witnesses ? I find it hard to imagine any Immam would understand it. Maybe the part where we all have to wait and wait and wait and wait and wait for Heaven to show up.

Having to be dead to get to Heaven is the commonality of every Religion.

If that was the case, why would Life ever had to have been created in the first place?

If life is a test? Man is so obviously doomed to fail it. What would be the point of a test no-one could possibly pass?

'More champagne vicar?'
Posted by: NOSTRADAMOUS, Blackburn on 2:56pm Mon 31 Mar 08
James believe it or not but the bible explanation by the Jehovas Witnesses is in fact quite easy to follow,i agree you are never going to convert a muslim to Christianity or at best very few,but i think Muslims like the simplicity of the JWs version of events, the no need for wealth creation, what will happen in the last days, they seem to tie in very much with Islam, and seeing that jesus and his crucifixition is mentioned in the koran along with his returning to earth at some point, they also do respect the fact that JWs would not let any secular happening stand in the way of there bible interpretation and belief again very much like Islam, there is more to it than that but it is the gist of it.If i was a believer i would follow the JWs path for sure, but that is only my oppinion,Please dont start telling me about man made words and stuff.Mate.lol
Posted by: NOSTRADAMOUS, Blackburn on 3:10pm Mon 31 Mar 08
Just to add and i think this may make you happy ..lol,the JWs believe that only a certain 144,000 rightoues ones will enter the kingdom of heaven, but milions more will live eternally on paradise earth. But you do have to accept that Jesus was/is the SON of god,not god himself but his son,not the holy spirit either, simply just the son of god,i only say just but it is a very big just,it is a very, very interesting version of Christanity but it does have a bad name, because in the main its followers want to and do try and tell everyone about the good news, i would never knock them.
Posted by: simplysimon, burnley on 3:38pm Mon 31 Mar 08
Sorry but I have more respect for the facts of the Beano.

When was religion about FACT! I have nothing against Jw's, in fact I had a couple in the house once. (Admittedly, one of them was quite fit.)

Religion is about believing what you want and getting away with it. It has nothing whatsoever to do with FACT.

If it had anything to do with Fact there would be no need to believe, it would no longer be a matter of belief or non belief.

Faith is not the monopoly of Religion. Though I think believers would like it if it was made compulsory. (now that is a joke)!

I am Alive! what better news could there be?

what do People want ?

'The wait until after you are Dead news' or The Incredible I am Alive! news!

very brave of you to invite a couple of JWs into your home - brave but foolish! how could you be sure that they would ever leave? Or are they in fact still with you?

No they left after about an hour. Just as confused as when they arrived. All they could do was look up quotes from their book and ignore reality.

Not much different than any other Religious theory, just complex and confusing.
