My sermons are therapeutic. Many wake up afterwards totally relaxed

THIS week, Clive said I'd get a free haircut if I mentioned him in my column, which is remarkable because, although my barber's not Scottish in his ancestry he tends to be in his cash registry.

Jesus never had this trouble. What with the then Jewish hair laws, the Lord wouldn't have bothered with Clive, though Jesus wouldn't mind at all if Clive bothered with him today, I occasionally hint.

However, Clive implies that he doesn't mind digesting the odd weekly column but, hey, come on; Sunday morning rest for stressed tress merchants is a wee bit holy. I mention how therapeutic my sermons are. Many wake up afterwards totally relaxed, but he's not persuaded.

I think my old barber has a funny notion of my day job and Christianity in general. He's a bit like the old Jews, thinking God-bothering is full of rules and regulations, the modern equivalent of obeying the no-cut hair law, and 6,000 other Jewish edicts.

Maybe he thinks, as do many, that Christianity is really called Don't-do-this-and-don't-do-that'. It's full of kill-joy commandments from a God out to exterminate all fun.

Yet the thing Jesus stressed was that he'd come to give abundant life, to be a shepherd and protector. Religion, he inferred, equalled rules.

What he offered was a loving relationship.

Which leaves one vital point.

Clive, that's the fifth mention. So, that's 2008 taken care of?

It's a pity your barber's name isn't Sweeney Todd...

Why on earth is this in the 'news' section of a newspaper website? If it was the deluded ramblings of someone practising another religion, such as Hindusim, Judaism, or Islam, people would be going berserk. Reverend - I suspect that people aren't turned away from religion because of the 'don't-do-this' commandments - it's probably more to do that in this day and age, organised religion has become transparent enough for us all to see that, sadly, it is little more than a vehicle for corruption and manipulation, and a good excuse for murdering innocent people in cold blood.

Interesting to see another attempt to distance "modern christianity " from "old judaeism ".

Let's follow the new testament instead. A reliable text after all, with only sixteen contradictory elements to the resurrection story. If the single most important part of the new testament (he died and came back to life to save us ) is so full of holes and contradictions how are we supposed to take any of it seriously?

The Rev exects us to get a set of rules to run our society from a 2,000 year old book that's got more contraditions than a parliamentary review?

Doesn't really work though does it?
A quick read of some of the rev's previous missives shows the true, regressionist agenda where you can forget your own freedoms to go to the shops on sunday, have sex before marriage, have sex with somebody of the same sex, abortion is completely out of the question and all the animals really did live near enough to Noah to fit in his ark which really was big enough to fit two of everything.

He "did not come to bring peace on earth, but a sword" Matthew, chapter 10, verse 34.
Nice man

Oh, there are in fact over 1,000 edicts / instructions in the new testament. An improvement on the old testament, but then again that was made up over a longer period of time.
eg
Young Women: Be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient (Titus 2:5)

Be not many teachers (James 3:1)

Be not entangled again with keeping the law (Galatians 5:1)
Beware of people (Matthew 10:17)
Beware of dogs (false teachers, Phil. 3:2; Isaiah 56:10)

Let women learn quietly in church or at home (1 Cor. 14:34-35; 1 Tim. 2:11). Very Modern, very appropriate for a modern age . . .
Let everyone choose his own sabbath day (Romans 14:5-7; Col. 2:14-17). remember that one next time you want to pull down the banner at Asda saying "open Sunday" Rev..........

I dont understand? A long loving relationship? with his hair dresser?

And speaking of 'dont-do-this-do-tha
t'... here's a juicy one:

Deuteronomy 25:11-12 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.

Awww, thats so kind, she saves his life and he cuts her hands off. Fair cop eh?

Kings 18:24,38-40 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, "The LORD -he is God! The LORD -he is God!". Then Elijah commanded them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let anyone get away!" They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

Feed the sheep their daily lies, for in lies they will find their Lord and Saviour. At worst, it will get you a free hair cut.

Once again, I thank you, sir, for putting the BEST news in the news paper. Your musings on Christianity are among the best parts of the week, and this is no exception.

I'd put Rev Kev amongst the worst correspondents of any rag published.
Intolerance, Bigotry, untruths and misinterpretations galore.
