I can still remember like yesterday the day that Jack Walker announced that Kenny Dalglish was taking over as Rovers' manager. It was October 12, 1991.
It was a special day for the Straw family anyway, as our son - then just 11 - was going to be the mascot at the game.
Everyone thought I'd fixed the date, but I'd arranged it months before, when I had no idea that Dalglish would be coming.
advertisement
The date sticks in my memory for another reason.
It was feeling the excitement in the air - almost the electricity - as the crowds went down the Bolton Road to the ground.
People were light of foot; a sense of self- confidence seemed to return.
And over the weeks which followed it became clear that this sense of greater confidence was not confined just to ardent Rovers' fans, but to the community right across East Lancashire.
Even Clarets fans would admit in private that good was being done for the area.
When we won the Premier League in 1995 it was amazing what a difference winning made. Blackburn really was on the map.
I was put in mind of all this when I went on my first visit to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium for Monday's game.
It's lovely. It's huge. It cost hundreds of millions.
The club paid over £60million just to move a waste transfer station that was on the site, so that they could start building.
We played well for much - sadly not all - of the game.
We're certainly much better than I've seen in many seasons in getting back into a game after conceding an early goal.
But I was also brought up sharp against the stark reality of the David and Goliath nature of today's Premier League.
Arsenal's average gate this season is 60,000. Ours is 23,500 (happily up by a seventh on last).
Standard tickets at the Emirates are £46 - and they fill the ground.
Rovers - who admirably have dropped prices this season to encourage bigger crowds - are lucky to get an average of around £15 a head.
So, for each game, Arsenal, with nearly three times Rovers' crowd, at three times Rovers' prices, will take getting on for nine times the gate at Ewood Park.
There's an added twist to this. It's no accident that all the really big wealthy clubs are in our big cities - London, Manchester, Liverpool. They each have a huge natural fan base.
Contrast that with Blackburn. We are the smallest conurbation by far sustaining a Premier League team.
Reading (in the relegation zone) has a council area, at 140,000 the same size as Blackburn with Darwen's. But it has a much bigger suburban hinterland.
Derby (a cert for relegation) is 240,000.
Middlesbrough is in the big Teesside conurbation.
And we are in the region with the greatest density of competing clubs - with Wigan (305,000) and Bolton (260,000) just down the road.
So what the board, Mark Hughes and the players are consistently achieving is in my view nothing short of remarkable.
Blackburn has always aimed high.
But do we take the significance of the club to the town and to the area too much for granted? I don't think so.
The fan base per head of population is also extraordinary.
I think - or hope - that everyone benefits from Rovers' presence, in the economy of the area, and what we feel about it.
It has a national record for its community activities.
The council has long been supportive, and has just put in £2million towards the new Business Centre in the Darwen End.
But could we all do more? My answer to that is "yes", too.
We have to nurture and sustain the club.
And even the greatest cynic would really notice the difference if ever it were not there.

Abolish council tax, Cut income tax and give us our pensions back in the private sector and we will contribute more to Rovers. Otherwise you are a Straw Man with no Brain.

Dont rate you as a politician, but the article is spot on and puts what Sparky and the board are trying (and succeeding) to achieve into some form of context.

"But could we all do more?"
Yes, definitely, like fix the transport situation. Getting to the ground is ridiculous, unless you're prepared to walk it. How is it there's a rail track within - how many yards is it? - and there isn't even a rail station there? How can the Rovers tap into the wider catchment areas, like Bolton (directly served on that rail line) and towns along the M65 corridor (yes, even Burnley) when it's so difficult to get to the ground?
Fix the infrastructure! Putting money into a business centre does nothing for attendances and fan support and incentives.

A well written article i think.
I am no lover of politics, well politicians but credit where credit is due.
I think the one thing we can do more for the team and the club is to voice our support at games.
23,500 east lancastrians in full voice would put 60,000 band wagon cockneys to shame.
We can provide the added push the team needs in the next 12 games.
STAND UP AND SING PROUD
IN HUGHES WE TRUST

I'm convinced this article as been posted by J.Straw to highlight what is becoming an ever increasing voice of disaproval by sections of the Blackburn faithful on this in particular site.
Have to say like others, Politicians can do things for there own ends(& do we trust them?) but this is a plea from what I see as a genuine supporter who is concerned by what is slowly a turning tide.
You either get behind your club & team or you dont. We as a club are in a critical period & it needs it's supporters to be behind it now.
I am not for a minute slating any supporter who vent there views but now is the time to stand up & roar our [bold]team[/bold] on through the rough patch we are obviously in.
Hail!!

Bit harsh slating the Minister for justice about things like council tax.
A bit harsh being critical of him about anything given the context of the article, which was very good by the way Jack, it's a shame more people in London don't realise some of the above factors to our attendance.
He is right to praise the club and fans (and to an extent, town) for its attitude to the club and its commitment to improving its status in the national and global game, but he is also right to say we could do more. Not more in terms of gate recipts, there's not much more a town of Blackburn's size can realistically expect, but for the 20,000+ will make more noise whilst watching our beloved Rovers play.

A really good article by a true Rovers supporter - Well done Jack.
What we now need is for the 2nd coming of another Jack Walker who can allow the club and the manager to compete with the rest of the Premiership clubs, cos if we don't then I fear that in a couple of seasons we may find ourselves in the Championship and struggling to get back with the elite.
Mark Hughes cannot keep producing bargain signings forever.
Sorry to appear a bit negative but we also need to be realistic.

I think concern has set in from the way the Rovers season started with high (ish) expectations following last seasons cup runs and players such as McCarhy hitting the headlines and the support from the first few home games was amazing, then just like a long flight, jey-lag has set in and the place is no more rocking that 20,000 plus ppl in Ewood park makes for a funeral aftermath - Jack Straw is bascially saying, he like every other supporter feels the change in wind and that home games in particular, certain fans saying 'I wish i'd stayed at home now, or those morons who just stay down below drinking and watching it on TV - The obvious fact that has ALWAYS been there is within the facts of the article, small club, small fan base, making peanuts in comparison to the Arsenals of this world, BUT that's not to say we are just there to make the numbers...we have a great set up, management and chairman, the team steady, could be better, and the owners could do with moving on...quickly..We are a unique team, having won the Prem League, the League Cup and been relegated and promoted - im a proud Rover!!!!

Why is Jack Straw trying to make excuses about rovers poor support and trying to suggest that everybody that attends games comes from Blackburn and Darwen. If that was the case, the club would still be getting crowds of 10,000.The club get thousands of supporters coming from the surrounding areas, just like everyother club.

[bold]Well Mr Straw, you work in the commons, why don't you do something about the disparity of income between north and south?
Also, the £2m the council have just so kindly donated to the new business centre could have gone some way to lessoning the huge financial blow many council employees will be experiencing come April 2009 when the Job Evaluation program takes effect. It seems there is a bottomless pot of cash where business is concerned. Unfortunately, business has stolen my team and hijacked football which was always the working man's game.
P.S.
I would have loved to have been able to join you down at the Emirates stadium but unfortunately, my just above the minimun wage salary I work hard to earn, doesn't stretch to even the odd trip to Ewood park.[/bold]

Stuart (and a few others) have hijacked a footballing thread and made it into a political one. Dry up, for Heaven's sake!
How on earth do you expect Jack Straw to address North-South income disparities? Introduce a Southern Tax and redistribute it to the North? Get real. Another example of a whingeing ninny, who's quick to point out problems yet has no practical realstic solutions.
And while we're on the subject of the Council putting £2 million into BRFC's business centre project, good on them, I say! The average Council Tax payer wants to see money being spent on enterprise, to boost the local economy, not to further line the pockets of moaning Council employees.
There's a very simple solution, if you don't like your job and you seek more money, get another job!
Good piece Jack.

Just read we are going to be paying millions of taxpayers money to an Asian who we arrested at the request of the Americans re 9/11. These people take our money and have no real responsibility how they give it away. And don't quote democracy at me - we have one or the other bunch of crooks evry few years. If we gave them 50% of what they have now and said get on with it they would have to budget like a normal business. Up the Rovers but the Straw man and his gang have invited 30,000 Asians into Blackburn who don't support the Rovers so wise up to the long term damage he has done to our club.
What has any of this got to do with Rovers or even football?!? It's just you having another moan.
Surely you can't be claiming that this is "humour". I'm guessing you don't get many laughs. I'm sorry to be the one telling you this but to most people it just comes across as just another complaining rant from a bitter and sad individual.
I've got to ask - does anything in life make you happy? Cheer up a bit for god's sake!

Jeppo, with all due respect fella, the slight increase in average attendances at Ewood that Mr Straw mentioned is due to the fact the club has allocated more seats to away supporters. This may also not be a very clever point either but i'm afraid its fact mate.Lets be honest,we can hide behind this small town label for ever but at the end of the day our support is small and getting smaller considering we are now an established premiership club.Ayzi has got a point.

I can't see why ticket fees, players wages, TV revenue, re-investment is a "political" issue at all. Next you'll be asking Jack Straw to intervene because you think the Odeon cinema is charging too much to watch a film; or you don't like the film schedule.
You do have choice, you just haven't worked it out yet.
Jack can highlight the North-South divide. So can I. So can you. But what do you expect him to do about it? What do YOU think should be done about it? Any answers?
I think Jack also made the point that BRFC tickets are as little as £15 vs. Arsenal's tickets at £43! Housing costs are massively higher in the South. So all things considered, you're probably not that badly off. And, working for the Council, you no doubt clock off at 4pm.

Cheerio![/quote] [bold]It's obviously pointless trying to engage someone who has no capacity for intelligent thought. I suppose the only opinions you possess are the ones you read in the Daily Mail or the Sun no doubt.[/bold]
[/quote] Sorry Stuart but I only read the Independent and The Graudian.
Your clumsy assumptions are way off the mark, as are your attempts to engage in politics.

Merlin, The Voice of Reason wrote: Stuart (and a few others) have hijacked a footballing thread and made it into a political one. Merlin: Call me, and I'm there.
Merlin, Life is political mate. You can't blow-off without it having some kind of political reverberation. Football, now more than ever, has a political significance. Just look at the major football topics right now like entrance fees, player wages, distribution of TV revenue, reinvestment into the game, they're all political boyo. I'd really love to live in your toy town world where the clouds are made from marshmallow and Postman Pat delivers the mail but I have no choice but to live in the "real" world you deluded numbscull. And by the way, if it is beyond Jack Straw's remit to highlight issues such as the great north south divide then perhaps you could pass on my concerns to Bob the builder if you think he might be a more capable candidate. Pillock!
Stuart, my old mucker: You can rant and whinge, and whinge again, as many times as you like but it won't change anything. You really do sound very frustrated with life. Perhaps a visit to one of the local brothels would help? Cheerio!

first time I've agreed with anything Jack has said, I think.
I think you have a future in sports reporting should you get kicked out of office.
I'd certainly pay more attention to you if that was the case!
