Darwen's cricketers need spirit of '99

I HAVEN'T actually seen any, but I'm told there are several cards in the windows of corner shops in town along the lines of: Wanted - Bowlers for Darwen Cricket Club. Hard graft. No pay.

The new Northern Premier Cricket League gets under way on Saturday and Darwen travel to face champions St Annes.

The Birch Hall boys have been among the top few teams in the league for the past decade. But they are going to struggle now.

No doubt Pakistani professional Atif Ashraf will bag another dollop of runs.

His last three innings were 144 at Netherfield, 140 at home to Fleetwood and 208 at home to Barrow. All not out.

I saw them - and they were breathtaking.

But Darwen have lost both strike bowlers - Keith Semple has returned to the West Indies and Andrew Mercer has gone to play in the Liverpool Competition to rekindle his enthusiasm. Yeah, right.

New skipper Andrew Cook took more catches than wickets last year and Jeff Hacking's battered legs won't stand another gruelling season.

So it will largely be down to the medium pace of Gareth Cordingley, the leg spin of John Cordingley and Atif's useful trundlers.

Unless someone comes out of the woodwork. I'm not holding my breath.

It all leaves a question about the encouragement of youngsters coming through the ranks and club spirit. Good luck, Andrew. You'll need it.

Team spirit had been the key to Darwen's championship success in 1999 after more than a decade in the doldrums.

And it was largely thanks to the inspired leadership of former New Zealand star Richard Petrie.

I was talking to him a few days back and he has fond memories of his super season at Birch Hall.

He told me: "That season was one of the most satisfying times of my entire career.

It might sound strange as I've played the game at the highest level but I had never played in a team that showed such spirit.

"In first class or international cricket players are very self-focused and take pleasure in personal victories.

"The Darwen lads of '99 were the best 'team' I ever had the pleasure to play with.

"Every player put the team first. I was just lucky enough to be the right guy in the right place at the right time."

He didn't mention that he'd topped the league bowling averages and come third in the batting list.

Paul Rodden, currently working in Australia, played in that team. "Richard was an inspiration," he said.

It was fitting that Petrie hit the winning runs - up at Netherfield - to clinch the championship.

He recalled: "Out in the middle you could feel the tension round the ground.

"It was damp and getting dark. I was really playing third fiddle to the Cordingley brothers, Gareth and Neil.

"They were tremendous and so were the fans who cheered every run."

Richard tells me that he is now busily grooming his young son, Max, for a spell at Darwen around the year 2020.

You couldn't speed it up a bit could you, Richard?

I have seen MP Janet Anderson out campaining for Dave Smith during the working day. Who is paying her? Answer we are. So not only are we paying her motoring expences to canvas for the Labour party we are also paying her wages. Remember that when she knocks on your door. Ask her who is paying her to talk to you and canvas for Dave Smith. It works out at aprox £100 per hour taking her expences into account. £2.00 per min and your money.

The best thing you can do is give her a gallon of petrol when she knocks on your door it will be much cheaper, but remember not to talk to her for too long it will cost you a fortune.

At least he writes in something called the Queen's English which is something you don't seem to have mastered. It might be boring but at least I can follow his drift. Janet - take the new ball from the Nursery End!

The question mark over club spirit was answered in fine style by over 30 players being on holiday together last week ! Six players under 20 in the team on Saturday , get up fot it !

Can't see what a gang of lads out for a Spanish booze-up has to do with team spirit. Youngsters in the team on Saturday? They won't have had much input into the veteran-hogging second team in the past season or two, I'll bet.

some people need to stop living in the past, the boys were successful in the past, will be again in the future. Good to see those who come to watch supporting the lads so positively. Did they not win the league at HOME to Nethefield. Darwen has a unique team and club spirit which should be used to strengthen the club. The pre season training camp in Magaluf for 38 gelled the lads together nicely. The team led by Andrew will be fine this year - easy top half finish, possibly Europe.

I think these comments about DDC are a joke.I dont think this human ever played the game!I myself played in a team last year that people said would not win a game all season long. Guess what league champions come September. To even question the players commitment and desire is frankly a disgrace.Every single player is behind the captain and each other.players come and go accept it and look to the future.
PS whoever this person is dont talk to me!

Get into the 21st Century! Talking of the latter the 1st XI have won six trophies in the last six seasons. Back to back League Titles, back to back 20-20's and two more cup successes, have seen a GOLDEN ERA in the clubs history. Yet the author talks about TEAM SPIRIT. If he wasn't aware the clubs junior practice nights are held every wednesday with over a 100 children attending. Effective partnership links into local schols will ensure the DCC production line for senior players WILL CONTINUE, JUST AS IT HAS FOR MANY MANY YEARS. Infact many clubs in the North West are envious of the way we develop our OWN talent.

Darwen have always had loads of promising youngsters in the very junior ranks. But what's been happening to them in recent years? Most seem to disappear into the ether. Not many come through. And when they do what do they get - Go and field in the deep. Run yourself daft. Forget bowling and if you're a good lad you can bat No.11. Really encouraging. Meanwhile, the second team Rest Home ploughs remorselessly on... Who gives a toss what they do in their own little world?

Mssrs Whalley D, Hadfield M and Grant S went to ply their trade elsewhere! As for the Clark brothers they both play prominent roles! Tough job replacing mssrs Cordingley G, N Hacking, Lowe, Mercer, Emery, Semple plus pro.

Harry...your nom de plume fools no-one - we all know who you are and your negative comments will not undermine the spirit at this great club. The academy is still turning out quality cricketers that are the envy of every club in the area. I think you owe young Andrew Cook and the team a drink when you are next on Birch Hall.

They always were a touchy lot at Birch Hall. Didn't realise that the Usual Suspects were forming a lynch party on this comment site. And the season hasn't even started! Don't hold your breath for that drink lads. Doubt I'll bother showing up this season. Might take up knitting...

If Harry cared to bother checking his facts he would find that the four young players making the transition into first X11 this weekend all made considerable contributions in the second X11 last season.
But in true journalistic fashion, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

No doubt Harry will be happy to continue spending hours of his own time to help the club – quiz nights (very poorly supported by players), publicity photographs and largely gushing reports, and that excellent brochure for Keith Semple for example. Er, perhaps not...

We all seem to be talking about the same bloke - but didn't he do rather a good job on that special programme after the sad death of our chairman Peter Lamster. And who put his no-claims on the line to get our pro back on the road? He did. Nobody else came out of the woodwork. And how many players and committee members invited Atif round to their home more than once for a Halal meal. No so many, I'd bet. He and his wife did. And who took Atif to hospital a few times after he had broken his finger at St Annes and couldnt drive? Yes. You've got it. Mr Unpopular. But of course unless you are heaping praise on everbody you just get slagged off. No wonder you can count supporters on fingers and toes. Mind you,. I think he gets in the odd dig just to wind everyone up. Doesn't take much, does it?

I used to know a guy just like Harry Nuttall, snooker loving, horse racing guru who liked a drink and a cig in the black horse.Always had an opinion and was usually on the button and in touch with local people. He gave his time and expertise freely and was a stalwart of many local sporting organisations.I agree that his production of Peters memorial booklet was outstanding and will be lasting memento.I also recognise the selfless way he helpes Atif in the last two years. However that does not give him the right to have a cheap shot at the incoming First team skipper who has stood up to be counted in what is going to be possibly the toughest season we have encountered for the last 15 years.
Yes it is going to be nigh impossible to replace in an instant Keith and Jeff,we could if we were St Anes or Netherfield simply import at cost two established players from elsewhere.Firstly we cannot afford this and secondly it isn't the Darwen way.We have replacements in our ranks already and they will eventually replace both the afforementioned two. What they will need is time and patience together with the WHOLE backing of the club.
I suspect that Harry had some part of his tongue in his cheek when he wrote his weekly rant and maybe he was trying to galvanise the club?
If this is the case he did a great job because everybody I know connected to the club is right behind Andy Cook.

The weekend has bin and gone and Harry was right!
Fist team got beat and it was all Andy Cooks fault. He had the bowlers on at the wrong end,the battin order was wrong and there were way too many promising juniors in the team!!
That must be reet coz I heard it in't George on Saturday night.
I once got Brian Lara out ct and bowled on't playstation and hit a massive six against texican trousers in the midweek league,Cooky wont give me a bat or bowl.I've written to Harry to see if he'll mention me in his column.
Frustrated Villager!!
C'mon cooky pull yer finger out!!!

"I suspect that Harry had some part of his tongue in his cheek when he wrote his weekly rant and maybe he was trying to galvanise the club? If this is the case he did a great job", wrote Victor Meldrew jr. I wonder where he got that idea from? Meanwhile, I do take exception to the suggestions that I "had a go" at Andrew. I recall wishing him the best of luck. His dad's a pal of mine and Cookie used to play cricket in my back garden when he could barely see over the stumps. And he could bat a bit in those days! Just a pity he took on the captaincy this season. The more shrewd players didn't want to know and I can't blame them. Over and out.

is that straight up - graham ainslie back in fost team?? bring on the youth!! the second team at darwen needs an overhaul - what is the purpose of a second team? Would the club rather have a successful second string or one which produces young cricketers for the first team for years to come. Are the junior section producing quality young cricketers or is it just baby sitting on a wednesday practice night??
