And my bouquets and brickbats for the year go to....

I THOUGHT I'd fill my New Year's Eve column with something along the lines of the Oscars and hand out some Harrys - and a few brickbats, or Waldorfs - after canvassing local folk I've come across while knocking around town.

  • Local Councillor of the Year

It was a toss-up between Lib-Dem leader David Foster and Labour stalwart Dave Smith.

Foster has been lumbered with the hot potato brief of adult social care and is struggling manfully with it; Smith always has something pointed to say about something or other and good for him. Councillor of the Year and my first Harry: Dave Smith.

A Waldorf for Tony Melia (FDP) for threatening the anti-Labour coalition by persuading Paul Browne to join his rather odd lot. For a couple of days.

  • Local Independent Retailer of the Year

The dearth of good local retail shops is a constant moan.

But there's one place that for 100 years has sold just about everything except perhaps baked beans and three-piece suites.

Staff can talk technical with the experts but are always happy to help the hopeless.

The Harry for the Independent Retailer of the Year goes to James Gibson.

A Waldorf for the Saddler's (Houghtons). Staff there are experienced and helpful, but when was the last time the place had a lick of paint?

  • Local Caff of the Year

There are some classy joints around town, especially Astley Bank which has been very popular with BwD Council members and officials as well as members of other local public bodies who don't have to foot the nosh-and-booze bills personally.

But for value for money and service with a smile the Harry for the Caff of the Year goes to CJ's.

A Waldorf for The Rosins who have sadly parted company with that very popular and flamboyant character Paul Flowers.

  • Local Pub of the Year

A difficult choice, even after careful and extensive vetting of most of the contenders. Finally, for grim determination in the face of road-work adversity, I've decided that the Harry for Pub of the Year should go to the newly refurbished - a great log fire! - and now excellent Crown & Thistle bistro and wine bar.

The pub Waldorf? I was hesitant to make an award as it could easily result in the shout: "Yer barred!" However, as I wouldn't venture past its drab exterior the folk at The Pub (ex Greenway) can have it.

  • Local Amenity of the Year

A lot of effort has gone into the parks but the dog muck is disgusting. Sainsbury's is super and the new health centre has come through early problems with flying colours.

It's a damn sight better than the old dump on Union Street - recently flattened in just four days ready for more flats - and it deserves the Amenity Harry, in spite of the poor parking.

Perhaps we'll finish paying for it one day.

Only one contender for the amenity Waldorf: Darwen Leisure Centre.

I couldn't agree more about The Pub which looks like it has closed down.

The Rosins has certainly lost a great host in Paul who treated every customer with the respect they rightly deserved and i couldn't agree more with your award.

The PUB has closed down ! As I understand things, it has been bought by a local businessperson who has other licensed premises. And is to be re-furbished in the near future. Let's hope so because it looks an eyesore from the outside.

We have always thought the Pub looked grotty from outside and would never attempt to go in.

As for the Rosins, it was one of our favourite places to visit, However it lost that magic touch when Paul Flowers left, going from a lovely well attentive service by Paul and his staff, to bar snack type meals and carvery, not our cup of tea.

Dave Smith cares about Darwen, and he tells people all the facts and the truth. He is not full of the false promises of the other lot, who then turn their back on people once they have their votes.

Well done Dave, you deserve it.

I totally agree with Andy on this one though we also need to be magnaminous about Harry's other nominee David Foster who seems to have continued the good work of Labour's Frank Connor at Adult Services.

However its a pity that his competence of overseeing a portfolio is not backed up with his political judgement and the friends he keeps. I'm of course talking about him throwing his hat in with the Fat Controller & the Darwen Assassin from the Tories and the badly named For Darwen and having a self confessed benefit cheat as his deputy for a number of months during 2007.
