Public art - brilliant, isn’t it?

I drove along the M65 the other day passing the stunning 12 metre high statue Arte et Labore by Tom Dagnall.

I think it's brilliant and a good silent ambassador for the borough.

Then there's the ones right in the heart of Blackburn on Church Street.

Transitions by Ian Randall. Boll, Gin, Mercer, Nep and Lumen.

All about the town and it's social, economic, industrial history.

At the top of the street the Woven Globe with a twin in neighbouring Darwen.

I'm personally not too sure about the light changing piece on Sudell Cross.

But that's what art's all about.

There will be detractors and Jeremiahs about these works.

But all confident towns have things we remember and associate with them.

I've always loved driving passed the Angel of the North and once detoured off the A1 to take a look close up. Stunning.

I love the Eric Morecambe statue commemorating the great comic on the Prom in Morecambe.

And of course, there's the Mannequin Pisse in Brussels. A little rude... but don't we all love it!

What do you think of our local art? What's your favourite nationally or beyond?

Waste of money! Bill, have a drive to the local hostels and see how many familys are having to live- due to the lack of housing in the area

Totally agree with Bill Taylor, the street art in Blackburn has received a lot of negative press from dim local people who just dont understand the quality of these public works of art.

Church street was and still is an excellent achievement and as for Mark asking for housing all i can say is, go find the work first then build your own house, dont expect society to provide it for you if you cant find the work then go and find it somewhere else.

Blackburn has provided too much in the past for so many in return for so little.

Theres plenty of houses for sale many empty so i dont see were Mark is coming from except for being stupid.

Johnnyboy, what a crap out look you have and dont tell me,let me guess,Aaah yes, your a NEW labour voter or maybe even a tory both the same these days, makes no difference really..LOL.

There are poeple living in this world, land,Town who through no fault of there own CANNOT get off the ground anymore, just to buy the scratiest of an old terraced house they are having to look at finding someone who can loan them 70/80000 pounds and there aint that much going in jobs for those people either, lots of college courses of course there are,you have seriously got to start and understand excactly how some folks have to survive in this world TODAY through no fault of there own, they just cannot get started but perhaps you havnt a clue what i am on about here, and all the sculptures and fine arts have to go straight over there heads mate, priorities are what we are talking about unfortunately priorities for some are totally and oh so sadly different for others, yes lets make a nice town for ourselves and lets see the fortunes that are CONSTANTLY being wasted by people who permanently pat thenselves and each other on the back stop being wasted,Bill Taylor knows the touchy points in our town that is why he keeps bringing them up,i have not met anyone who praises any of these very expensive monstrosities, whilst i have discussed the finer details and meanings, with, lets say the more intellectual of our town who in the main also agree that it is very funny,a bit like the urban river thingy..LOL Wake up Johnnyboy the coffee smells great..lets help these people to get a start, not kick them in the goulies by telling them how much we have paid for a load of crap we are sticking all over town, lifes about poepl mate not art.

Nostradamos,

I found it very hard in deed to agree with some Labour winker and agree with the sad decline of our once proud nation under 'New labour'.

Costs have gone through the roof, but, thats the price of living in new labours Britain.

Never, will never, shall i vote Labour, but i agree with the works of art they look better than the drab moaners who think the world owes them a living that life should be better for them when they contribute little or nothing to it.

Houses can be part rented part bought to ease the finacial burden for the long term unemployed they should leave and look for were the work is not think that society owes them a living, thats all.

The college courses are designed for these people to stimualte, build confidence and get the skills required to earn a decent living if they arent prepared to take responsibility for themselves does Blackburn really need them. I think not.

Sorry for the mistake on the new labour bit,in the main i take on board lots that you say, a couple of points i struggle with,1) i am not quite sure that Mark, is a scrounger although it isnt impossible that you yourself could be mark,,lol,,i have made more or less the same claims as Mark but you havnt jumped down my throat, but i am talking bout young couples with no financial support available from parents, yep,as you say it is renting thats the answer, another way of the rich getting richer.
2) College courses, you say these are to develope skills for future jobs,ok i say a very small percentage will gain enough skills to get a job from this path, other than those doing it through apprenticeships and the like, but what i will say is that it totaLLY DISGUISES THE UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES.
Does Blackburn really need them,i agree no it doesnt and a purge is needed and the results should be published in the LET,we are currently classed third highest in the country for claiming benefits,i would love these poeple to be named and shamed, who are they?,how long have they been on benefits?this must stop and the only way to do this is to find out who they are,and for sure Blackburn does NOT need them.

Nostradamos - do you purely come on these just to moan and disagree, if you don't like them, don't read them - simple

I thought a town was about it's People. Not just about some People. The right People. The decent People. The rich People. The poor People. These People or Those People.

Is the Unity of People not an Art too!

Blackburn has more reasons not to unite than ever before. Who comes up with these reasons. Who comes up with these differences.

The People of Blackburn.

If SIR billy can have his benefits, why can the poor not have their benefits. If the rich have a right to their benefits, why can the poor not have a right to their benefit?

The rich will no doubt stay rich and the poor will no doubt stay poor.

Art has never been an object subject to ownership. It can be seen in private or it can be seen in public. I Like the shared public version of Art.

Art is the Joy. Not the object.

I think the whitebirk roundabout needs a 40 foot high Rovers badge on it for all our east lancashire visitors to ogle over as they come into town.

Art has to be a statement and Blackburn shouldnt under sell itself because of the self inflicted down trodden brigade but stand proud in the foothills of lancashire.

There should be more Public Art in Blackburn. More emphasis should be put on Public Art that appeals to not just one group. Football fans could express their Love for football.

Football Fans must be a form of Art. Unless there is a serious point in 22 Men playing with one ball.
