3:00pm Saturday 16th January 2010

MORE than 311 litres of illegal spirits, 22,000 cigarettes and around £17,000 were seized during raids on two premises in Bury.

The seizure, at an unidentified domestic and retail address, were carried out by Revenue and Customs officers. The cash has been detained as suspected crime proceeds.

Inquiries are continuing following the discoveries and no arrests have been made so far.

Graham Forbes, HMRC special investigations manager said: “Trading in smuggled and counterfeit goods isn’t a harmless fiddle.

“The gangs behind this form of criminality reap huge profits from sales which are ploughed straight back into the criminal underworld, feeding activities like drug dealing and fraud.”
