Where I'm Calling From and The Krissy Matthews Band both scored highly in the opening rounds of the Local Heroes competition, an online talent search to uncover the best unsigned artists in the country.

The contest is sponsored by the Oxford Mail's parent company Newsquest and saw thousands of votes pour in for up-and-coming bands.

Artists loaded songs on to the competition website, where fans could vote for their favourite band or singer.

The votes have now been tallied up - and although the two Oxfordshire bands did well, they did not secure enough votes to make it through to the national play-off at the Islington Academy tomorrow.

The winning band will have the chance to play at six summer festivals as well as getting their own tour manager, PR agent and video crew.

The Oxfordshire bands were competing in the Midlands region, which was won by Leicester-based IST.

Ben Osborn, the 18-year-old singer and guitarist with Where I'm Calling From, said: "It would obviously have been great to have gone through, but there are a lot of good bands in the contest who have a good national following, while we're reasonably new.

"I would definitely like to think we're on to something special. We have had some really positive reviews from the local press and lots of promoters have been enthusiastic about our stuff."

Blues guitarist Krissy, from Bicester, is just 13, but has already recorded an album, called Influences, which is being distributed in Scandinavia retitled as Bluesboy, after he made a big impression with appearances at the Lillehammer and Notodden Blues festivals in Norway.
