DANIEL Barritt and Elfyn Evans finish the World Rally Championship this weekend as they compete on home soil in the Wales Rally GB.

Welsh driver Evans, aided by Barrowford co-driver Barritt, currently sits eighth in the standings in his debut season in the championship.

The Wales Rally GB has a ceremonial start in Colwyn Bay tonight and finishes in Llandudno on Sunday after travelling through the Welsh forests.

The duo competed in the rally in the WRC2 championship last year, but this will be the first time they compete together in the event in the main World Rally Championship.

“The event itinerary and the route look really good so I think it’s going to be an exciting weekend,” Evans said.

“To have the opportunity to drive a world rally car for the first time so close to home will be a fantastic feeling.

“I learned how to drive a rally car in the Welsh forests and I’ve always really enjoyed driving there.

“Needless to say it will be pretty special to come back to these stages in a world rally car for the first time."

Evans is cautiously optimistic ahead of the event where he hopes to match his 2013 result of eighth place.

“There will be a lot of competitive drivers at this event so I think we need to be realistic," he added.

“We were eighth here last year, so it would be good to better that – although it would be nice to be at the higher end of the top eight.

“Let’s wait and see. It will be a difficult event and anything can happen.”

Evans admits weather conditions could play a big part in the rally.

“The stages themselves aren’t overly technical,” he said.

“The challenge comes from the changeable conditions.

“If we get fog or heavy rain it can make it really difficult and that changes the surface of the roads quite a lot.

“There’s also an element of being able to judge where the grip is and that’s one of the things that makes this event such a challenge.

“It’s always been a rally of high attrition and it’s almost about getting to the end as much as it’s about performing well.”

Evans and Barritt currently sit in eighth place in the championship standings after an impressive year.

A strong result could see them overhaul Kris Meeke in seventh spot which would ensure they ended the season as leading Brits although realistically the pair will end the season where they are now.
