I SEE that Burnley have denied making another bid for Troy Deeney, and I think they have enough strikers now anyway.

After the signing of Lukas Jutkiewicz they have five strikers, with Danny Ings, Sam Vokes, Ashley Barnes and Marvin Sordell also at the club.

I think they’re covered in that position. The manager will know what he wants and maybe he might be looking at getting another midfielder in.

There is still talk about the defender Craig Dawson from West Brom, although I think we do have options there because Ben Mee can play centre half if required.

But I think the manager will be pretty happy with his squad and the club know they have to be careful with their budget.

Chelsea are our first opponents in the Premier League and they have signed another big money player, left back Filipe Luis for £15m, but we can’t compete with those sorts of clubs.

Hopefully we can in the first game of the season, though, although it might not be easy to win that match 8-0 like we did in our first pre-season friendly on Sunday. I think I would settle for 1-0 against Chelsea!

The excitement is building now, I am starting to count down the weeks until that first game.

It was good that Barnes, Jutkiewicz and Sordell all scored twice in Austria and it will be interesting who partners Ings in the first game, with Vokes injured.

Barnes came in at the end of the season and did well.

I went to Tenerife earlier in the summer and I got talking to the former Manchester City player Tony Book, who was telling me that Ashley was his nephew.

He was asking about how he was getting on at Burnley, and I said from what I’d seen he’d done quite well. Tony will be coming up for the City game I think.

Maybe Ashley might start the season and get the chance to carry on that form.

He will certainly want that shirt and then want to hang on to it.
