IT will great to see a former Burnley player line up for England tonight, and I’m sure Gary Cahill can handle the occasion.

Gary came to Burnley and really impressed at Turf Moor. He later went to Bolton and had a couple of really consistent seasons.

No disrespect to Bolton but he was always going to go higher than that and play for a bigger club, and he has done that with Chelsea.

Gary’s time at Burnley shows the value of the loan system. You saw with Joe Hart, too, when he went to Birmingham and it launched his career.

When clubs think they have a player with potential they send them out on loan to see how they handle the pressure of first team football.

Gary handled that really well at Burnley when he was on loan from Aston Villa back in the 2004/05 season.

I’m sure he would say how appreciative he is of the chance he got at Burnley, and how much it helped him kick on.

The next couple of weeks will be the biggest pressure he will have faced, it’s a step up to another level but I’m sure he can cope with that just like he coped with the step up as a youngster at Burnley.

It would have been great to see Jay Rodriguez at the World Cup too and I think he would have been pushing to be in the squad if he hadn’t got injured.

But at his age, time is on his side. I’m sure he’ll be at the next tournament.

Maybe Craig Dawson could be at the next World Cup, too, and I hope that Burnley are able to sign him from West Brom.

I knew him when he was at Radcliffe Borough and he went on to Rochdale and scored quite a few goals there before getting his big move to West Brom.

He hasn’t played a lot at West Brom for whatever reason, but he has played for England under 21s and if he can cut mistakes out of his game I think he can go on further.

I think the chance to come and play regularly in the Premier League for Sean Dyche is probably something he would like.

At his age it would be a no brainer of a decision for Burnley. He would be a good signing.
