The second day of the Perth April Festival and the feature is the £25,000 Kilmany Challenge Cup and, as long as the ground doesn’t deteriorate too badly, the vote goes to Silver Roque (4.20) who has an excellent record fresh and is returning from a four-month break.

Conor Shoemark takes off a valuable 5lbs and, although 11lbs higher than for his successful seasonal reappearance at Sedgefield, can reward each way support for the yard of Fergal O’Brien.

Last year’s winner Quincy Des Pictons is only 2lbs higher and had the selection behind on that occasion, but Silver Roque has an excellent record after a break and can reverse the form despite being slightly worse off at the weights with the 2013 winner.

The Nigel Twiston-Davies yard love their forays to Perth and they can make the journey home a happy one courtesy of Pure Science (3.50) who looked to be crying out for a step back up to 2m 4f when scoring at Ludlow last time and he is only 6lb higher this afternoon.

Do note this horse finished sixth in the Champion Bumper just over 12 months ago but has taken his time to find his feet over timber.

Hollow Blue Sky has never won over 3m but ran a cracker at Haydock at the weekend and has every chance.

A chance is taken, however, that the first time hood does the trick for the very much in form yard of Philip Hobbs and Ballytober (3.20) who returns from a seven-week break.

A winning pointer, bumper and hurdler the form of his third to Samingarry and Annacotty at Chepstow in December reads very well in this company and he is 5lb lower in the weights today.

The handicapper had a difficult job assessing Wolverhampton winner Genius Boy (4.00 Beverley) who was backed into 8/13 favouritism on debut but only scrambled home for trainer James Tate. The colt cost £120,000 Guineas as a yearling and is certainly bred for the job. He has a good draw in stall three and Luke Morris keeps the ride.

Godolphin suggested they would be using Kieren Fallon more this term and true to their word the former champion gets the leg over on Night Party (5.00) in the finale; the filly showed more than enough in two juvenile starts for the Boys In Blue to suggest a modest maiden was within her capabilities.

The Mark Johnston trained Cayjo will get further in time and might be one for handicaps later in the season; Night Party can send favourite backers off into the night on good terms with themselves.

William Buick is at Brighton this evening and the unexposed Baltic Brave (7.5) is taken to score for Hughie Morrison in the lucky last.

The selection improved with each start last term and looks well treated for his handicap debut although a check of the market is suggested for his seasonal return.
