Willie Irvine column: Burnley as good as up

Lancashire Telegraph: Sean Dyche Sean Dyche

IT was hard not to mention the P word after Saturday’s valuable point at Watford put us 10 points clear in second again, after QPR and Derby slipped up.

Bournemouth and Eddie Howe did us a favour by beating our nearest challengers, and Harry Redknapp has conceded that they won’t get automatic promotion and the Clarets are home and dry.

What an atmosphere it promises to be at home to Middlesbrough on Saturday as we near the finishing line and the Premier League.

Without Sam Vokes and Danny Ings I thought we might struggle to score, but we stuck to the plan and Ashley Barnes was unlucky to get caught offside before Scott Arfield came up with another important goal for us.

While the emphasis has been on the front two all season, defensively we have been very solid too, with Jason Shackell and Michael Duff forming a vital partnership this season.

With Kieran Trippier and Ings back from injury, and Dean Marney from suspension, it has given this small squad a lift at an important time, and hopefully momentum to get over the line.

After Leicester City secured their return to the Premier League at the weekend then automatic promotion looks very probable for the Clarets.

It has not all been good news though, after the blow of Sam's season being cruelly cut short, Burnley-born ex Claret Jay Rodriguez's World Cup dream is sadly over, after he suffered an identical injury.

What are the chances of that?

But they will both be determined to get back fit up and I’m sure both will come back stronger.

Doesn't matter if Derby win all their remaining fixtures - we need just four points to guarantee promotion.

It's going to happen.

Agreed Champagne. Assuming that Derby do, indeed, win all their remaining fixtures we need can afford to lose three games, draw one and win one. If Derby drop any games to a draw, two draws out of five games will do us.

We are, for all intents and purposes already promoted. Can we still catch Leicester?

Rob, cummon its not like it was an important game at Barnsley. We are only on the verge of the promised land. But seriously you would think the LET would want any `local` team in the PL but obviously not. Always has been and always will be a Blackburn rag. Should be funny next season when we are at Chelsea and Woevers are playing Doncaster !!!!!!

It's no good complaining guys, it does no good (I've done enough today). As far as Derby's fixtures are concerned I don't care. If we win on Saturday then we will have to do something we haven't done all season in order to miss out; lose 4 games on the trot. We've only lost 4 all season. In reply Derby would have to win all theirs.
I wouldn't mind betting that even Sean "one game at a time" Dyche is getting more than a little excited. And rightly so, if anyone deserves a drink at the end of this one it's the man himself.

Anyway, whatever happens, going on Turf Saturday should be a great and wonderful day, better if we win it, good if we draw, and maybe concerning if we lose and Derby win. However, if Derby lose and we win, it is Premier League Party Time in Burnley!!!

Hoping the weather stays mild and dry as the BBC weather forecasts it to be, and I think it is time for Burnley fans to begin realising that the lads are going to achieve what bigger and more financially secure clubs have not. It seems the underdogs have turned to be quite the pedigree, my chums.
Get down Burnley Saturday and make some party noise, because I am!!!
Come on you Clarets!!!

My mate the Huddersfield Town fan is convinced that they are due a good away performance and reckons the terriers will turn Derby over.

Just for Saturday I'll be temporarily wearing blue and white (stripes) as well as claret and blue.

Why would you be looking forward to us playing Chelsea? Poor Blackburn fans, it really is pathetic that the only kind of solace you can get now is hoping that your bigger neighbours get beat by one of the best sides in world football?

Good luck in your annual battle against relegation to Division Three - we will be mixing it with the top sides in Britain, again.
