West Lancs League: Green go gunning for a double promotion

First published in Sport

HURST Green are gunning for double glory after their second team all but wrapped up promotion to Division One next season with a handsome 6-0 win over Lytham Town.

A Chris Scott double at Smithy Row and strikes from Zach Foley, Ryan Cattermole, Graham McEwan and John Walsh did the damage.

Hurst Green secretary Ian Barton said: “It is a fantastic achievement, and the two reserve coaches, Steve Young and Andy Holden have done a great job.

“They lost their first three games of the season, but since then they've done superbly, scoring 90 goals, the highest in the division.”

Hurst Green’s first eleven are in the thick of the promotion action too, but a 2-0 defeat to mid-table Burscough Richmond last weekend could prove costly in their quest for Premier League football next season.

Top dogs Lostock St Gerards took full advantage to ease eight points clear of the Ribble Valley men.

Lostock thrashed Dalton United 5-1 with Jamie Sanderson (2), Luke Berry and Mark Thompson among the goals.

Battling Mill Hill St Peters are clawing their to safety, and Luke Gornall and James Grubb struck in a vital 2-1 win at Furness Rovers.

Meanwhile, in-form Burnley United are eyeing up a top six Premier League finish.

United have hit a rich vein of form recently, and they proved much too strong for Longridge with Oliver Wood netting twice and Richard Cowan also on the mark, in a comfortable 3-0 victory at Chipping Road.

Premier Division championship favourites Charnock Richard are running away with the title, and they made no mistake, beating neighbours Coppull United 3-0 with late goals from Carl Grimshaw (2) and Andy Roberts.
