Beattie wants clinical Stanley

Lancashire Telegraph: James Beattie James Beattie

ACCRINGTON Stanley manager James Beattie knows his side need to turn chances into goals if they are to continue to climb the League Two table.

The Reds couldn’t find a breakthrough in their 0-0 draw at Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night despite having 16 shots and 13 corners.

Stanley are 18th in the table – six points clear of the bottom two ahead of Saturday’s trip to Exeter City.

And Beattie believes the performance at the Victoria Ground in midweek warranted more than the solitary point.

The Stanley boss said: “The performance is probably our best away performance of the season.

If that was a boxing match it would have been stopped.

“But football is all albout sticking the ball in the back of the net.

“We have been in this position before where we have been dominant and we needed that little bit of extra quality to finish the game off.

“But it is another yardstick for the boys.”

The result means Stanley have lost just one of their last six – at leaders Rochdale – and they end a hectic month of eight games in 29 days at Exeter on Saturday knowing a win could see them climb into the top half.

And Beattie believes that being within touching distance of the top 12 is testament to his side’s character.

The Reds boss added: “The rise that we have had since we won our first game is tremendous.

“Paul Stephenson (assistant manager) showed me a league table today that puts us in sixth since the first of October.

“The lads have come so far as a group that it makes me immensely proud to be in charge.”
