WITH Waddington Red having already secured the title of champions of the Dorothy Southworth indoor bowling league at Roefield Leisure Centre Clitheroe, the focus of attention in the final set of fixtures has turned to the runners-up spot.

And what a tense finish is anticipated. In an intriguing twist of fate the last week of competition has thrown up what promises to be a nail-biting tussle between Longridge Commodors and Waddington Blue, but with a simple outcome. Whoever wins claims second spot.

Hurst Green took advantage of Sabden’s recent slump in form to record a maximum 6-0 points victory which was even more remarkable as in the previous meeting Sabden had registered a similar maximum win.

Champions Waddington Red had a resounding 56 shots to 21 victory over Read, with both mats scoring an identical 28 shots.

The game between Clitheroe Blue and Longridge was the proverbial game of two mats.

On mat one Clitheroe’s Jeff Marshall, Jeff Cowling and Ray Black beating Kath Haworth, Tony Hargreaves and Tom Haworth by 20 shots to 10 only for the Longridge trio of Hazel Woods, Dave Thompson and Harry Pinder to outplay Muriel Wilson, Olga Black and Robert Warburton 31-5 and in doing so take the aggregate and set up a final-week runner-up decider with Waddington Blue.

The shock of the week was undoubtably the 6-0 victory of bottom of the table Clitheroe White over West Bradford.

This was the first time that the Whites had registered a maximum win and had John Hardacre, Paul Carlton and Colin Bank with a 20-17 win along with John Spencer, Norman Cowell and John Barlow (16-11) to thank for this unexpected result.

This week sees the final fixtures of the season and teams are reminded that the end of season presentation and buffet will be held at Roefield Leisure Centre at 11am on Tuesday, April 1, and all registrations of existing and new teams for 2014-15 should be handed to Neil Ashworth at the centre as soon as possible.
