Blackburn Rovers defender targets regular run

Lancashire Telegraph: Matt Kilgallon Matt Kilgallon

MATT Kilgallon believes he has done enough to retain his place at the heart of the Blackburn Rovers defence for tomorrow’s trip to basement boys Barnsley – even if skipper Scott Dann returns.

Reports last night suggested in-demand Dann had been the subject of a failed bid from Norwich City.

When asked if Rovers had turned down an approach from the Canaries for their captain, Rovers managing director Derek Shaw said: “No comment.”

Dann, who is also wanted by Crystal Palace, missed Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Derby County.

That gave Kilgallon the chance to make his first league start for Rovers since November 9.

And he hopes his assured performance alongside stand-in skipper Grant Hanley will convince Gary Bowyer to stick with him for the Barnsley clash.

“The gaffer is true to his word, if you do well you keep the shirt, and I was quite happy with my performance but obviously it’s up the gaffer on Tuesday,” said summer signing Kilgallon, who played a major part in Rudy Gestede’s goal for Rovers against the Rams.

“The gaffer has gone with Grant and Scott this season as they did really well for him last season when Blackburn were struggling.

“I understood that when I came in but the Championship season is long, there’s so many games and you know you’re going to be in there before you know it.

“It’s not about getting your lip out and spitting your dummy out, it’s about training well.

“I’ve just kept my head down, supported the lads and now I’ve got my chance.”

Dann pulled out of the Derby match with an Achilles injury.

Rovers boss Gary Bowyer said: “He trained on Friday and then overnight he felt the injury.

“He had a fitness test in the morning and he felt he wasn’t fit to play.”

Bowyer fears winger Ben Marshall is set to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines after he came off on Saturday with suspected ankle-ligament damage.

“We don’t know the full extent of it but it’s not going to be one that is a week or two,” said Bowyer, who is hopeful winger Josh King will be fit to face Barnsley after a knock ruled him out against the Rams.

“Ben has gone for a scan straight away so we’ll know more after the weekend.

“I’m disappointed for him as he’s been playing out of his skin.”

Bowyer confirmed he will attempt to strengthen his squad before tomorrow’s game.

But he clarified that the only permanent signings Rovers – who have been linked with a loan move for Montpellier’s France Under-21s midfielder Bryan Dabo – will possibly make before the window shuts on Friday will be free transfers.

Bradley Orr became the 14th player to leave Rovers this month after he completed his year-long loan to FC Toronto.

Nuno Henrique and Paulo Jorge could follow Orr – and Portuguese compatriots Fabio Nunes and Edinho Junior – out of Ewood Park this week.

Ta ta Scott and take your hugely over-inflated, Kean-endorsed, lead-weight, undeserved salary package with you. Kilgallon even manages to get the basics right at a fraction of the £35k/week that you seemingly get.

Totally agree. Kilgallon did not put a foot wrong on saturday, and although Dann has been much improved since the early days when we signed him, I do think there are better ways to spend his reported salary/transfer fee.

I don't doubt that Kilgallon can do as good a job as Dann who I have always felt is on the verge of his next major ****-up.

I am especially not bothered if the rumours are true if on Saturday he did a Sherwood/Samba and decided he couldn't be arsed playing.

However I doubt the business sense of letting him go far a relatively small fee.

I understand we will save on his ridiculously over inflated wages (assuming of course we are not still paying a portion of them!), but (with Songo'o now gone), we are left with no cover for the position most likely to suffer injury and suspension.

It will cost us most of what we save to sign a replacement which will be a panic buy.

I thought Kilgallon was excellent on Saturday.

According to Statler and Waldorf, one of them does appear to have "inside information" Dann is on his way.

I won't knock Dann, he's done a pretty good job for us but he still has a PL contract and if Rovers can work the oracle, get a couple of million for him and get another high earner off their books then it's another step in the right direction.

And I am pretty sure GB will have his replacement lined up.

Dann looks like he's off which is a shame and the squad will be a lot weaker....hope GB has some good replacements coming in for Dann, Rochina, DJ along with others!

I happen to think that we will be quite ok in this position for some time if as seems likely Dann does go. On his salary we really can not afford to keep him. Yes he is playing well at the moment but so is Kilgallon. However we have two young men currently on loan to Torquay and Rochdale who look cracking prospects and with a bit of luck and some hard work will be playing for us for some time to go. AND will be on a lot less than the reported salary we are paying to Dann.

Very concerned about only being able to make free signings, as this means we won't be in the market for the likes of Fryatt or Waghorn. Unless he attends to initially sign somebody on loan with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season (if they impress). It's is very difficult to improve your team with just free transfers, i accept it can be done, but just take a look at Bowyer's free signings at the start of this season, many of them have been sent out on loan, as they weren't and arn't good enough. False economy in most cases.

Personally I would try and get Best to terminate his contract by mutual consent. He may agree to this as without a transfer fee, he may be able to get the kind of wages he gets here somewhere else. The situation as it stands now is benefitting neither us nor Best.

I think Dann will be sold this window, probably for around £2m to £3m. And I would use this money to buy a replacement centrehalf, bring in a creative midfielder on loan, and buy a forward like Fryatt. Problems solved.

I whole-heartedly agree with you. Footballers today are paid just too much and the supporters who pay their hard-earned money to go to the games do not even earn that kind of money in a few lifetimes. Okay, they may have an early retirement and sacrifice family lives, etc but that is not the point.

Going back to the transfer window, I am hoping that Etuhu and Best will go, too but Rovers will need a buyer before we can get rid of them!

I don't see why anyone is surprised about Bowyer being 100% honest with the fans and telling us that he is probably only going to be able to take free transfers on... We have to reduce the wage bill and knock a big loss of the club, which is what this transfer window was always going to be about!

Let me just point out, our team now consists of:

Keepers: Robinson, Eastwood, Kean

Defenders: Kane, Henley, Kilgallon, Hanley, Spurr, Dann (which if he goes will certainly be replaced)

Midfielders: Lowe (can play at the back if we had an injury), Dunn, Marshall (can play at back too), Williamson, Taylor, Evans, Cairney, Mahoney

Forwards: King, Rhodes, Gestede

How well has our side been transformed from last season... how many have we got rid of this January but yet kept a great core squad together! We have 19 games left, 3 points outside the playoffs with 57 points to play for, a good side to have a crack at it and confirmations that we can still add loan players to our pretty strong team!

I read the comments following the Derby game and thought that most of them were very harsh about GB! Yes he didn't make changes that we all thought were not the best... I still don't think I could do a better job!! We were on the verge of a win over one of the strongest teams in this league! Give the guy a break! He's doing his best, which in my eyes is a **** sight better than I expected and he has done wonders with our football team in less than a single year!!

Lighten up and enjoy the bloody game lads.. We're on the up!!!

Can I have a bucket full of whatever you are on Chris lol.

I am only critical of his tactics and I put a lot of that down to his inexperience, he has to learn to adapt though and quickly otherwise he is risking spoiling all the good work he has put in so far.

I read somewhere this morning that in the last month or so he has moved around 19 players out of the club, ok the majority on loan and we are probably paying part of each of their salaries, but that's good work in my book.

We're on the up!!![/p][/quote]Well said & 100% right ted1951

Centre halfs spitting out the dummy when they can't get their own way , Danny still drinking with Hendry.
