Dave Burnley column: Burnley old boys are regular scorers

Lancashire Telegraph: Martin Paterson Martin Paterson

BURNLEY got off to a marvellous start to the New Year with their 3-2 victory over Huddersfield Town at Turf Moor.

And if we do have to concede a couple of goals in the process, they might as well be scored by an ex-Claret. Although, I bet Martin Paterson must have been thinking what might have been had he stayed at our club.

After facing former captain Chris McCann against Wigan in the previous game, we were always in line to have a third consecutive recent, former player in opposition when we were drawn against Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup with Jay Rodriguez likely to play at some point.

The Clarets once again saved themselves for a second half comeback after going in 2-0 down at the break. A classic cup tie with some real quality goals scored by both side saw the Saints eventually triumph by the odd goal in seven.

Danny Ings scored against the team he supported as a kid, with our very own Jay-Rod reciprocating with one of his own.

Local lad come good, and his subsequent meteoric rise to a full England international proudly being acknowledged by the proud 800 or so travelling faithful.

A valiant effort, best summed up by Sean Dyche who said: “If there is such a thing as losing the game the right way, then that was it.”

With all distractions out of the way we can solely focus on our dream of promotion back to the Premier League as we head to a new ground and the delights of Yeovil.
