BURNLEY striker Sam Vokes has signed a two-year contract extension, committing his future to the Clarets until 2017.

The Wales international is just one away from a career best goals return after scoring his 11th of the campaign - and first in the cup - in a narrow 4-3 defeat to boyhood club Southampton on Saturday.

His 12-goal haul for Bournemouth in the 2007/08 season earned Vokes a big money move to Wolves the following summer.

He went on to lead a nomadic existence, which included a loan spell with Burnley in the 2011/12 season under former Cherries boss Eddie Howe.

But Vokes made Turf Moor his permanent home the following July.

The targetman spent much of last season playing understudy to top scorer Charlie Austin, but has flourished following Austin’s summer sale to QPR, forming a formidable partnership with Danny Ings.

Between them they have scored 31 of the Clarets’ 47 league and cup goals this season, helping to fire Burnley to second in the Championship by contributing 26 of the club’s 36 league goals between them.
