THIS photograph from the Lancashire Telegraph archives may have been taken 45 years ago but it should be instantly recognisable to readers.

It shows the open market in Great Harwood which was located in front of the town hall and under the imposing clock tower.

The clock was built in 1903 in honour of John Mercer, the scientist who gave his name to a new way of treating cotton - Mercerisation, which made the fabric stronger and easier to dye.

Market stalls were a familiar sight in towns around East Lancashire and at the heart of local communities.
