TODAY’S delve into the Lancashire Telegraph archive has unearthed a photograph which features a country home which is believed to have played a major role in one of the most infamous episodes in East Lancashire history.

For the building, photographed in 1952, was believed to have been the home of Elizabeth Southerns, better known as Old Mother Demdike, one of the so-called Pendle Witches.

Nestling in the shadow of Pendle Hill, the cottage in Worston, was where Elizabeth lived in 1612 before she - along with 11 others - was taken to Lancaster Assizes to face charges of witchcraft. She died in jail while awaiting trial. Ten others were found guilty of witchcraft and hanged.

The tale of the Pendle Witches has endured since then earning a macabre place in the area’s history.
