Chairwoman Peta Davies, 33, vice chairwoman Kristy Wadman, 33 and secretary Joanne Jones, 31, took over the event after last year’s committee stood down.

The trio have promised to carry on the tradition with the help of the other nine members.

Peta Davies said: “We are all from Darwen and the gala is one of our main childhood memories. We know how important it is for the town and it’s a brilliant day. We want to carry on this tradition for the next 50 years and continue to bring the community together.”

Former England international David Dunn will officially open the gala on Saturday, August 20.

There will be an appearance from everyone’s favourite Snow Queen, a performance from the Chinese Lion Dancers and entertainment from Accrington Pipe Band.

The gala will be held on the same day as Darwen’s 1940s Day in town and those who can’t make it up Borough Road from the market can get a ride to Darwen Tower in a Land Rover for a donation of just £2.

Kristy said: “We wanted to involve the whole town and ensure there was something for everyone. The gala is brilliant and we have kept all of the traditional stuff there but had a fresh approach to other things.

“As a kid you always knew at the end of the six-week holidays the gala was on. It was always a day you could look forward to and we all have happy memories of the gala.

“We wanted it to carry on after the former committee stood down and we will be making sure the future generation have a gala, too.”

The women said that Darwen’s businesses have helped the event be a success once again.

Joanne said: “We would like to thank the local businesses that have supported us and been really helpful. This is our first year in our new roles but we have pulled it off, knowing it will be a success as well as a fantastic day.”
