A LEADING member of Hyndburn’s Chamber of Trade has retired after 22 years of trying to develop local businesses and the town centre.

June Pickup has stepped down from the role of secretary at this year’s AGM, where she was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a bottle of a champagne for all her hard work.

Originally intending to stand down 12 months earlier, she was persuaded by the committee to stay in the post until a replacement could be found who could maintain the high standards set by June.

Raymond Goldstone, president of the chamber, said: “It’s been an honour to work alongside June for the past four years, nobody could have been more dedicated, professional and efficient and I share everyone’s good wishes for a long and happy retirement.”

Over the years, June has seen many changes within Accrington and been involved in all the chamber’s various efforts to promote the town and improve the town centre for the good of retailers and shoppers alike.

As secretary, June was the main contact point for members, prospective members and any other outside organisations or individuals.

She would often be at the forefront of the chamber’s activities, organising meetings, taking minutes, writing letters and organising the annual dinners.

Incoming secretary Shirley Howard said: “I would like to thank June for all her hard work over the past twenty years.

“As a secretary and friend of the chamber she has been dedicated in raising the chamber’s profile. Taking over is going to be such a privilege.”

Mrs Howard, who runs Craft and Crumpet, was elected unanimously as the new secretary, with Julie O’Hara of Barbara Kays elected as the new treasurer to replace Diane McDonald, who has stood down.
