A ‘SHOW-OFF’ student who left two friends seriously injured when he smashed into a wall driving at speeds of up to 110mph on a 30mph road has been locked up.

Imran Zaman, 20, had taken his father’s Volkswagon Golf without his permission because he was late for college and decided to take three friends for a spin in the lunch break.

Zaman lost control on a bend in Wheatley Lane Road, Nelson, went up a wall and through wrought- iron fencing. His rear seat passengers Umair Khan and Hafiz Ali were both trapped in the vehicle and firefighters had to cut off the roof to free them.

Burnley Crown Court was told how Mr Ali suffered a tear in his bowel and abdomen, had to have surgery and spent five days in intensive care.

Mr Khan spent five days in hospital after receiving a fracture to his left elbow, which had to be pinned. The front seat passenger was also injured, although not seriously and Zaman himself was trapped by the leg.

Zaman, who was driving without insurance for the second time, was sent to a young offenders institution for 12 months. He was banned for two years and must take an extended test.

The defendant, of Clegg Street, Brierfield, had admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and one allegation of aggravated vehicle taking on March 10.

Prosecutor Stephen Parker said at the time Zaman was a student at Nelson and Colne College.

The defendant turned into Wheatley Lane Road and was driving at excessive speed. Mr Ali looked at the speedometer and saw the needle going between 100 and 110mph and asked the defendant to slow down shortly before the crash.

Mr Parker said a witness told police: “Such was the speed, I thought they had just robbed a bank.”

Defending Zaman, Laura Heywood said: “It was a very stupid mistake.”

Passing sentence, Recorder Anthony McLoughlin told the defendant: “You were seeking to show off to your friends. That is not just naive but immature, but it had led to very serious consequences.”
