RESIDENTS have complained about fireworks being set off late at night to celebrate Asian weddings in Pendle.

Several people have taken to Facebook to vent their frustration over firework displays with some being reported at 1.30am.

Danielle Moore, from Nelson, said: “I was so mad, woke my child up. There was loads going off all at once. I just wasn't impressed because it took me a long time to get her back to sleep. She is only three.”

The display was part of a post ceremony celebration and has been a feature in recent summers around East Lancashire with an increasing number of Asian weddings taking place each year.

People as far away as Harle Syke reported hearing the sounds which went on for several minutes.

The law states that except on a very limited number of special days using fireworks between 11pm and 7am is illegal and people caught letting them off can be fined up to £5,000 or six months in jail.

Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson has raised the issue with local police, who have agreed to look into reported incidents.

Mr Stephenson, who highlighted the issue as far back as April, said; “Late night fireworks are an anti-social nuisance. Even if they are let off as part of a celebration, people are being kept awake all hours and are angry nothing has been done about it. I'm pleased police are looking into this. What is happening is against the law and needs to stop."

Members of the local Asian community were also unimpressed by what they saw as inconsiderate behaviour.

Mubasher Arshad, from Nelson, called the displays 'backwards' before adding that, 'some Asians have made up their own wedding traditions in an effort to try to impress and outdo each other."

Manawar Shah, from Nelson, also mentioned how he had been on many online threads to persuade people that it was not a good thing to do.

“It also infuriates me when people insinuate that we Asians agree with this anti-social behaviour,” he said.
