MAJOR works starting this week to improve one of Blackburn’s most complex road systems will be well worth any disruption, borough transport boss Maureen Bateson has promised.

The Rovers supporter and ward councillor pledged that problems the year-long £4 million, seven phase remodelling of the Ewood Gyratory System cause motorists, residents and fans going to Ewood Park would be kept to a minimum.

MORE TOP STORIES:

The first stage, knocking down the former Albion Mill, is under way and the site compound is in place.

Work will soon start on a new link road over the demolition site with a new roundabout at the Livesey Branch toad/Aqueduct Road junction to take traffic from the A666 Bolton Road.

Rovers matchday parking will be maintained throughout the 12 months to the North-West of and behind the Albion Works, and on an extended Aqueduct Road car park with the current middle barrier removed.

Blackburn Rovers St Bartholomew’s car park will be extended and resurfaced.

Future phases of the scheme, part of the £40 million Pennine Reach project to cut bus journey times between Hyndburn, Blackburn and Darwen, will bring:

  • A new access to the nearby travellers’ site
  • Enhanced traffic signals to provide bus priority at the Bolton Road / Aqueduct Street junction
  • Improvements to cycling facilities through junctions
  • High quality bus shelters and bus stops on Bolton Road
  • New traffic signals at Catterall Street’s junction with Livesey Branch Road and Albion Street n Landscaping and the replanting of trees and shrubs on Aqueduct Road.

The new system will make Bolton Road for buses only but the link road is designed to speed motorists journeys as well as cut public transport journey times.

Coun Bateson said: “There will be disruption but we will keep it to a minimum for residents, motorists and football fans.

“I firmly believe the final result will be well worth it.”

Blackburn MP Jack Straw said: “It’s a difficult road system in need of improvement.”

That's typical of the clown hall if they have a demolition team looking for Albion mill four years to late. It was knocked down in august 2010. But that sums up bwd council clueless.

Not before time. I remember that triangle system being introduced at Ewood in my early days at school in Blackburn 40-odd years ago. It has been unchanged since yet there must be two or three times the amount of traffic going through it. I look forward to seeing it when it's finished.

This is just one of three stories in the LT tonight regarding this Pennine Reach scheme. (The others cite Darwen and Accy). This whole farce has cost millions so far in consultations and recent works and will cost millions more before the whole scheme come into fruition. All this to provide bus lanes leading INTO Blackburn from Darwen and Accrington. So this will, they claim, speed up bus journeys INTO Blackburn, but not OUT from Blackburn. So by putting in bus lanes it means that all cars heading into Blackburn will be reduced to a snails pace, and ALL traffic out of Blackburn will be just as congested, possibly even more congested, than it is now. All these millions spent is from OUR money (irrespective of whether its government grants or local authority expenditure) which we hand over in the form of Income Tax, National Insurance, Council Tax, Business rates etc...it's OUR money that Labour are hell bent in spending come what may. Does anyone know ANYONE who has been canvassed as to whether they want this scheme? All I have ever read about are people OPPOSED to this scheme. Can someone from the council give us figures of just how many people have been canvassed and how many actually want it?

I bet she is also one of them that protested in stopping Peels uplift of Whitebirk Retail Park which would have brought a load of money into the community and jobs but never mind eh, the travellers will find a good spot next to the closed and empty retail stores and everyone will still go to Preston and Bolton as they have free parking rather than get ripped off at the mall for parking and hardly any good shops, pound shop and gold sale paradise...

“Coun Bateson said: “There will be disruption but we will keep it to a minimum for residents, motorists and football fans.”

“Blackburn MP Jack Straw said: “It’s a difficult road system in need of improvement.”

An extremely large amount of money has been spent recently in an attempt to rejuvenate Blackburn. After thirty odd years for Jack Straw to have held his safe seat as MP for Blackburn could this be yet another attempt to help make his final farewell next year a success!

But most importantly - Who is going to win Blackburn’s safe seat next?

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Try telling the powers that be that! Instead of straightening the A666 they are introducing even bigger curves. Plus blockages in the name of bus lanes, guaranteed to slow traffic. Just as Liverpool see the light and get rid of theirs, this backward authority start putting bus lanes in place on roads not even wide enough as they are.
