THE family of a Darwen man who died of cancer three years ago are to hold a fundraising party to celebrate his 30th birthday.

Paul Nixon, of Huntingdon Drive, died in November 2011, just three months after being diagnosed with a rare sarcoma cancer in his thigh.

His family has raised cash for charity Sarcoma UK ever since, in an attempt to raise awareness of the disease.

And to mark what would have been the popular former teaching assistant’s 30th birthday, his family has organised the party at Level One nightclub in Market Street on September 26.

Paul’s sister Leah said: “The shindig will consist of an auction, raffle, live music, food, a DJ and dancing at one of Paul’s favourite clubs.

“It is hard trying to believe that he is not here but I always look for positive things to do to keep his memory alive and also do things in a way in which he would have wanted.”

Mum Lynn said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support from friends and family ever since we lost Paul.

“I still miss him every day but we have always tried to raise money for the charity so that something good can come out of his death.

“If more was known about sarcomas when Paul was ill, they might have been able to do something, so it is important that more money is raised to fund more research into it.

“On the night itself, we hope everyone who knew him, and even those who didn’t, come out to remember what a lovely man he was.”

Since Paul died, family and friends have raised thousands of pounds for the charity.

Leah has done a number of fundraising challenges, including a skydive, while Lynn has raised money through losing weight and Leah’s boyfriend Michael endured the 12-mile ‘Tough Mudder’ obstacle course Tickets for the party at Level One cost £5, with all proceeds going to Sarcoma UK.
