A FLAG raising ceremony is to take place in Rossendale next week in support of Armed Forces Day The event will take place at St Mary’s Gardens, Rawtenstall, on June 23 and begins at 10am.

Coun Tom Aldred, the newly-appointed Mayor of Rossendale, will be in attendance alongside Andrew Wilson, the Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire.

Coun Aldred, Labour member for Facit and Shawforth, said: “Armed Forces Day is a national day.

“And Rossendale Council felt it should recognise the day and have a flag raising to commemorate it and what’s happened in the past.

“It’s to give support to Services people for what they do for us and what they’ve done over the years.

“The people that I’ve spoken to about it appreciate it and agree with the sentiments about it.

“I’ve never spoken to anyone who says it shouldn’t be done.

“It’s more to the fore this year with the centenary of the start of the First World War.”

A short service will be led by Reverend Martin Short, the Dean of the Borough.
