Nelson striker helps wife give birth at home then scores winner for his team

Striker Peter Wright has delivered plenty of match-winning goals during more than a decade in non-league football.
But the Victoria Park hotshot had to provide an altogether different type of delivery on Saturday – that of his second child, Jessica.
And less than 12 hours after he helped his fiancee Rachel Livesey give birth in their home, the 31-year-old netted a 91st minute injury time winner in Nelson’s 4-3 win away to Daisy Hill – keeping the Admirals four points clear at the top of the North West Counties Football League Division One.
Peter said: “Rachel got up at 2am and shouted for me at 5am. She was having contractions every 90 seconds so I rang the midwife.
“As she came down the driveway I had another midwife on the phone and Rachel’s waters broke. I didn’t know whether to run to the door or what.
“I let the midwife in and when I came back in the room I could see the baby’s head. The midwife gave Rachel some air and gas and about two seconds after she sat down, Jessica was born.
“It all happened so quickly. It was amazing. Obviously I was panicking a bit but I just got on with it.”
Peter, from Lostock Hall, near Preston, said 30-year-old Rachel, an accountant, had already given him the thumbs-up to play if the baby was born on a matchday.
He said: “I thought that maybe I shouldn’t play but our other main striker has left and we’re up at the top of the league so I was needed.
“It was just adrenaline keeping me going at the end. I just had a feeling I would score.”
Peter marked the late winner – his 20th goal of the season – with a thumb-sucking celebration in honour of his new arrival. Rachel, 6lb 14oz Jessica and the couple’s son Lewis are expected to be at the Admirals’ East Lancs derby against Darwen at the weekend.
