RESCUE teams helped a woman suffering from hypothermia  from a steep canal bank this evening.

The Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue team, the North West Air Ambulance and two fire engines from Nelson fire station were all called at 5.15pm.

The woman was found underneath the Swinden Aqueduct, close to Cravendale Avenue, and the emergency services were alerted.

At this stage, it is unclear how the woman, described as middle aged, found herself underneath the aqueduct which crosses the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Fire officials said she suffered no physical injuries but was taken to Blackburn Royal Hospital for treatment for hypothermia.
