TEACHING at a nursery has been described as ‘superb’ as it received its third outstanding report from Ofsted.

McMillan Nursery School in Nelson was found to be outstanding in all categories by inspectors.

In her report lead inspector Louise Murphy said: “This is an outstanding school.

“From often very low starting points, children achieve exceptionally well from the time they join the nursery. The school provides excellent support for children who speak English as an additional language, more-able children, disabled children and those who have special educational needs. As a result, these groups make outstanding progress.

“Teaching is superb. Staff plan together daily and consider very carefully what children enjoy. This ensures amazing learning activities which enthuse and excite children because they are based on their interests.”

The outdoor area was described as contributing ‘extremely well’ to children’s learning and development. Staff were also said to use the nearby woodland area ‘imaginatively’ with their charges.

The behaviour of children was noted as exceptional with children able to concentrate for very long periods of time.

Ms Murphy added: “The headteacher is very ably supported by a well-qualified and dedicated staff team who work relentlessly to make sure that all children get the best possible start to their education.”

McMillan's headteacher Gillian Wroe said: "We're very pleased to have received our third outstanding rating. The criteria has changed so it is tougher than ever to get a good rating so we are thrilled. We have all been celebrating. "
