East Lancashire MEP: UKIP is not just mad, but bad too
1:43pm Friday 20th September 2013 in News
EAST Lancashire MEP Chris Davies used a Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow to voice his opinions on shale gas, nuclear power and the ‘danger’ of UKIP.
Mr Davies ripped into UKIP, declaring them ‘not just mad, but bad’, and suggesting they could put the long-term future of three million jobs at risk.
He said: “The global economy is still fragile and UKIP would happily move us away from our friends in the EU to take a risk on their own.
“When the seas are choppy, you don’t jump out of the boat, into the storm.”
Mr Davies also called for a proportion of any fracking profits to be given to local communities, which he said could bring jobs and cash to northern towns and cities.
He said: “Employing local people to extract home grown gas instead of relying on the goodwill of Russia is good for the local economy and the environment.”
He argued the need to reduce carbon emissions means nuclear power could not be excluded from the energy mix, and said engineering firms throughout the region could benefit from the Liberal Democrats decision to drop its long standing opposition to the use of nuclear energy.
He said: “Nuclear power is a massive strength of our region and the Liberal Democrats have accepted that we need to embrace it if we are to fight climate change and cut electricity bills.”
