Drug addict raided family home in Colne
6:00pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in News
A HOUSEHOLDER confronted a night-time raider who, unbeknown to him, was armed with a knife, a court was told.
The victim and his wife had been awoken after drug addict John Ibbotson, 25, cut the cable to their gate intercom and they spotted him walking down the drive.
Ibbotson then stole a £2,000 haul, including laptops, from their detached garage, but denied taking anything when challenged and escaped.
When he was arrested nearby he was found to have a penknife on him.
Ibbotson had been on bail when he struck, after breaking into an empty house. He was caught after leaving blood. He had also invaded a caravan in Colne on May 8, stole a jacket and was again caught by his DNA, after discarding a cigarette.
The defendant, of Thomas Street, Colne, admitted house burglary at Smith Street, Nelson, theft, burglary at the garage on Holme Terrace, Nelson, and possessing the knife. He was jailed for 18 months.
Mr Macro said when questioned, Ibbotson said he had drunk a bottle of whisky as it was the anniversary of his father's death. He said he had been out in breach of a curfew, fallen asleep and awoken. He claimed he found the stolen property and the penknife.
The defendant had a long record.
