Mary Berry to judge Clitheroe firm in cupcake contest
A CUPCAKE shop has been named as a finalist in a national competition to be judged by TV baker Mary Berry.
Cupcake Boutique, based in Swan Courtyard, Clitheroe, will compete against 46 other businesses in the National Cupcake Championships in Birmingham on November 9.
The shop was set up in 2011 by Natalie Owens, 25, from Clitheroe, and she is hoping her cupcakes, made with an old family recipe, will see her take home top prize.
She will present her gluten-free bacon and maple syrup cupcake to The Great British Bake Off star for judging.
Natalie said: “It’s just not sinking in that my small shop has been named as a finalist.
“The shop is my dream and I can’t believe that I’m getting this kind of recognition.
“I love what I do and I just hope that I can do the best I can on the day.
“I’m so nervous about having Mary Berry judging my cupcakes and I really hope that she will not be disappointed.”
Businesses from across the country could apply for the competition in four categories: classic, ‘free from’, themed and made with alcohol.
Natalie put forward a cupcake in each category and was eventually successful in the ‘free from’ section.
Cupcakes made in the ‘free from’ category have to be free from an ingredient to suit a special dietary requirement such as wheat, gluten, dairy or nuts.
She said: “It will be such an amazing experience to go to the NEC in Birmingham and compete with some of the best professional bakers in the country.
“I hope to be coming home having done myself proud.”
Organisers are also holding an amateur competition alongside the professional championships for the first time.
