A road in Burnley remains closed today (May 14), after a ‘sinkhole’, caused by a collapsed culvert, opened up in the road.

Manchester Road, by the junction of Calderbrook Avenue and Reynolds Street, closed last night (May 13).

A picture shows the damaged tarmac on the road.

The road remains closed while Lancashire County Council’s highways team investigates the collapse, which happened following the flooding on Sunday evening.

The council will issue an update when the issue is resolved and the road can reopen.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "We're currently investigating damage to the tarmac on Manchester Road in Burnley, following flooding that took place on Sunday evening.

"As a precaution, we have closed the road and put diversions in place.

"We're grateful for people's patience while we investigate this issue."
