An Accrington-born singer is set to appear in a musical parody about the real-life court case involving Gwyneth Paltrow.

Diana Vickers, a former Westholme School, has secured a role in I Wish You Well, detailing the courtroom clash that detailed Gwyneth Paltrow’s crash on the ski slopes in 2016.

Diana, who appeared on The X Factor in 2008, will play the 51-year-old and said the show will be “iconic”.

Lancashire Telegraph:

She said: “It's going to be iconic. Thank you Gwyneth Paltrow for bringing us the moment we never knew we needed.

“So excited to be working with the most powerhouse team!”

The show, choreography by Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips, will be shown at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, which takes place in August.

This musical will tell the (mostly) true story of the celebrity trial, Gwyneth vs Terry Sanderson.

Packed full of iconic moments including the moment she whispered “I wish you well” to Terry as she left the courtroom after winning the court case.

The Oscar-winning actress won the civil lawsuit, brought by retired optometrist Terry Sanderson.

Ms Paltrow was cleared of all fault over the incident, which occurred at the Deer Valley resort in Utah, which left Mr Sanderson with several broken ribs and head injuries.

Jurors deliberated for just over two hours before returning a verdict in her favour, and awarding her damages of one dollar.

Lancashire Telegraph:

It is described as “a fast-paced parody” and a “hilarious musical that is bursting with heart”.

Director Shiv Rabheru said: “I, like the rest of the world, love true crime and celebrity scandal. The Gwyneth Paltrow ski trial had me hooked and I was addicted to the iconic memes and tweets.

“The hope with ‘I Wish You Well’ the musical is to feed our audience's fascination with celebrity crime, and pack in even more chaos. We all need a little more joy and silliness in the world… this fabulous show has had me laughing so hard I’ve needed my inhaler! 'Ski' you in court!?”

Producer Paul Taylor-Mills said: “From the moment I first heard Roger and Rick’s outrageously funny book and hilariously witty songs, I knew that I had to produce this.

“The musical is utterly ridiculous and hilarious and is the right tonic for what the world needs right now.”

Diana was a semi-finalist on the X Factor and she released album called ‘Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree’ containing the number one single, and pop banger ‘Once’. Since then she has become a star of the stage, appearing in Dial M for Murder.

More details about the cast list will be released at a later date.

The world premiere of I Wish You Well is one of four productions produced by Paul Taylor-Mills at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024. It will air at Udderbelly, Underbelly George Square, from August 3 until August 26.
