A new day care centre for older people is set to return to a Blackburn community hub.

Blackburn-based Homecare For You have revealed plans for the new day care centre at Bangor Street Community Centre.

It comes over a decade since the last elderly day care centre closed at the centre, when it was council run.

The plans are for the new day care centre to open in the late summer.

Bangor Street Community Centre has been run by a charity since 2016 when it was transferred to private ownership as part of an asset transfer.

Homecare For You said they would be investing £100,000 in bringing the largest unit inside the building up to scratch. The care provider has been redecorating the area for the past four months.

Mahfooz Hussain from Homecare You said the company wanted to reinvest in the local community and realised there was a huge demand for the service for people of all backgrounds.

He said: “This is something we have been looking at for a while and when the opportunity arose at the centre it was too good to turn down.

“We want to create a space where elderly or vulnerable people can come and spend time.

"We are renovating the whole area to upgrade the washrooms, the main sitting area as well as the garden.

“People will be able to come here and have a shower and find out more about local services on offer.

“There will be a range of services including hair and beauty, eye and hearing tests as well as a chiropodist.

"The aim is to give people some respite and to allow them to have a space of their own.”

The centre was once home to an elderly day care centre known as "Apna Ghar" (Our House) which closed 14 years ago. The section lay empty until it was revitalised as the council transferred management.

It became home to a disability day care centre – Purple Patch, which outgrew the unit.

Mr Hussain said services would be open to private, public and NHS providers and the aim was for the centre to be Care Quality Commission registered.

He said: “We want to have a minibus that can pick residents up and aim to cater for up to 40 people at the centre.

“Thankfully, the section of the building was formerly a day care centre that has helped a great deal when we have looked at developing this service.”

Homecare For You provides services across the North West and has offices in Burney, Accrington Preston and Rochdale.
